Abstract: Compounds of the formula I in which : C4H8 = a unit of a butadiene-free olefin cut which contains at least 30 mol% of isobutene; n = 2 to 6, preferably 2 to 3, X = a proton, alkali metal, half alkaline earth metal or optionally substituted ammonium ion, a process for the preparation of these compounds in which reaction products of oligomers of a butadiene-free C4-olefin cut having n monomer units are subjected to a heat treatment with maleic anhydride in neutral aqueous medium at 170 to 220 DEG C under autogenous pressure and the resulting lactonecarboxylic acid is optionally neutralised with alkali metal hydroxide, alkaline earth metal hydroxide, ammonia or an amine base, and the use of the compounds as corrosion inhibitors in aqueous systems, e.g. industrial cleaners.
