Abstract: Dimethylaminobenzenesulphonates are prepared by reacting nitrobenzenesulphonates with formaldehyde and hydrogen in the presence of a copper- and aluminium-containing hydrogenation catalyst which has been precipitated in a specific manner and has specific properties, and in the presence of phosphoric acid, at a temperature of 50 to 150 DEG C. The compounds which can be prepared by the process of the invention are valuable starting substances for the synthesis of dyes, in particular rhodamine, oxazine and reactive dyes, and furthermore of pharmaceuticals and pesticides.

Abstract: New polyazo dyestuffs are hydroxyphenylazo-diphenylazo naphthylazo-cpds., which, in the form of the free acid, have formula (I) (in which D is the radical of a diazo component. n is 0 or 1. One X is OH and the other is amino. Y is SO3H or one Y can be H. Z is -NHC6H5, -NHC6H4Me, -NHC6H4OMe, pyrrolidin-l-yl, piperidin-l-yl, hexamethylenimine, morpholin-4-yl, piperazin-l-yl, 4-methylpiperazin-l-yl, 4-(2-hydroxyethyl)piperazin-l-yl or thiomorpholin-4-yl S-dioxide. Rings a can be substd. by Cl, Br, Me, MeO, EtO, COOH or CO3H. (I) are specified for colouring leather and paper. They are also useful for natural and synthetic fibres, e.g. cellulose, cotton, regenerated cellulose, wool, union, silm and nylon and give dark blue to black colours with good fastness.
