Abstract: 1,153,775. Oily butadiene polymers. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIC A.G. 6 Oct., 1966 [7 Oct., 1965], No. 44667/66. Heading C3P. Oily homopolymers of butadiene and copolymers of butadiene with up to 25% by weight of a copolymerizable olefinically unsaturated monomer, are made by polymerizing the monomer or monomers, in an inert organic solvent at temperature of from - 50‹ to + 50‹ C., in the presence of 0À2 to 10 mole per cent, of the reaction product of sodium, potassium, rubidium, or caesium with a compound of the formula where A is an aromatic radical, R 1 , R 2 , R 3 , R 4 denote C 1 to C 20 saturated aliphatic radicals, x is an integer of 1 to 4, and n an integer of 2 to 20. Any substituent must not react with the above metals. The solvent may be selected from aliphatic and cycloaliphatic ethers, aliphatic, aromatic, and cycloaliphatic hydrocarbons. Compounds of Formula (I) may be cumene, o or m or p-cymene, o, m or p-diisopropylbenzene, isopropylnaphthalene, diisopropylnaphthalene, alpha - ethyl - propylbenzene, triisopropylnaphthalene, triisopropylanthracene, mono- or di-isopropyl anthracene, isopropylcarbazole, isopropylfluorene, or retene. Suitable compounds for preparation of compounds of Formula (II) are m or p-diisopropylbenzene, 1,4 - diisopropyl - 2 - tert.- butylbenzene, 1,4 - dibutyl - 2 - ethylbenzene, 1,4 - diisopropyl - 2,5 - di - methylbenzene, and 1,4 - diisopropylnaphthalene. Suitable comonomers are isoprene, styrene and substituted styrenes, esters of acrylic and methacrylic acids, and esters of maleic, fumaric, and itaconic acids. The polymers are recovered by conventional techniques such as washing with water and hydrogen halides. The polymers may be aftertreated.

Abstract: A self-extinguishing composition consists of (a) a normally solid thermoplastic homopolymer or copolymer of styrene which may be substituted by alkyl groups in the nucleus or side chain and which contains more than 50% by wt. of styrene or the substituted styrene having intimately incorporated therewith (b) an organic bromide having a plurality of bromine atoms attached to the carbon atoms and the bromine atoms constituting more than 40% of the bromide, in such an amount that the composition has a bromine content of 0.1-5%, and (c) 0.01-5% of (a) of a compound of formula where RA and RB are a phenyl radical which may be substituted by at least one C1- 3 aliphatic hydrocarbon radical, a C1- 4 alkoxy radical, Cl or Br; R1 and R2 are H, Cl, Br, a C1- 6 aliphatic hydrocarbon radical or cyclohexyl; R3 and R4 are Cl, Br, cyano, nitro, a C1- 6 aliphatic hydrocarbon radical or phenyl. The (a) polymer may be polystyrene and/or a copolymer of styrene and acrylonitrile. Compound (c) may be 2,3-diethyl - 2,3 - diphenylbutane; 2,2,3,3 - tetraphenylbutane or 2,3 - dimethyl - 2,3 - di - p - tolylbutane. The bromide (b) may be hexabromododecane, tris - (2,3 - dibromopropyl)-phosphate or tetrabromoethane. The composition may be made by dissolving the three components in methylene chloride. The composition may also contain a foaming agent, e.g. pentane, and may be formed into a foamed sheet.
