Abstract: PROCESS FOR THE PRODUCTION OF IMPACT-RESISTANT POLYMERS BY THE CONTINUOUS POLYMERIZATION OF A SOLUTION OF A DIENE ELASTOMER OR ELASTOMERIC COPOLYMER OF ETHYLENE AND PROPYLENE, THE STARTING MATERIALS BEING FIRST PARTIALLY POLYMERIZED TO SUCH AN EXTENT THAT THE SOLIDS CONTENT OF THE MIXTURE IS 1.1 TO 2 TIMES THE CONTENT OF DIENE ELASTOMER BUT NOT MORE THAN 16% BY WEIGHT, THEN INTRODUCED INTO AN ISOTHERMAL POLYMERIZATION STAGE WHERE A MIXTURE CONTAINING LESS THAN 50% BY WEIGHT OF SOLIDS IS PREPARED AT A TEMPERATURE OF FROM 50* TO 150*C. WHILE MIXING, WHICH MIXTURE IS TOTALLY POLYMERIZED IN THE DOWNSTREAM CONTINUOUS POLYMERIZATION STAGES AT A TEMPERATURE OF UP TO 250*C. TO GIVE A MIXTURE CONTAINING MORE THAN 60% BY WEIGHT OF SOLIDS, AND THEN FREED IN A CONVENTIONAL MANNER FROM VOLATILE CONSTITUENTS.

Abstract: - 20 - O.Z. 0050/37072 A thermoplastic molding material consists of a polycarbonate A and a graft copolymer B, the latter consisting of an elastomer (rubber) b1) and a shell b2) grafted onto the elastomer. The elastomer b1) contains, as copolymerized units, from 35 to 100% by weight of a diene from the group consisting of the conjugated dienes of 4 or 5 carbon atoms, and can contain, as copolymerized units, from 0 to 65% by weight of a monomer from the group consisting of the alkyl acrylates or alkyl methacrylates, where alkyl is of 1 to 8 carbon atoms. The shell b2) is obtained in a conventional manner by successive polymerization of the monomers constituting the shell, in two process steps, in the presence of the elastomer b1); in a first process step, from 10 to 90% by weight of a mixture of a vinylaromatic hydrocarbon and one or more ethylenically unsaturated monomers which differ from the said hydrocarbon, in a weight ratio of from 90:10 to 60:40, are first incorporated as copolymerized units, followed by the polymerization of from 90 to 10% by weight of a monomer from the group consisting of the alkyl acrylates or of the alkyl methacrylates, where alkyl is of 1 to 8 carbon atoms. The molding material is used for the production of shaped articles.

Abstract: An ABS molding material comprising a copolymer matrix A in which is dispersed a graft copolymer B. The graft copolymer B is composed of styrene and acrylonitrile as the grafting monomers on polybutadiene as a grafting base and has a mean particle diameter of from 0.2 to 0.45 .mu.m (d50value of the cumulative mass distribution). The gel component, isolated from the molding materials, is required to have a spin-spin relaxation time of from 0.7 to 1.5 .mu.s, so that the molding materials have a high surface gloss coupled with good notched impact strength even at low temperatures. The copolymer A can be a copolymer of styrene and acrylonitrile or a terpolymer additionally containing .alpha.-methylstyrene. The molding material can furthermore contain conventional additives. The molding materials according to the invention can be employed where great toughness coupled with high gloss is required, as in household appliances and in the automotive industry.

Abstract: The invention relates to a thermoplastic molding material which contains a mixture of (I) from 95 to 5% by weight of a polyphenylene ether and (II) from 5 to 95% by weight of a copolymer consisting of A1) from 74 to 99 parts by weight of a monovinylaromatic monomer, A2) from 1 to 26 parts by weight of an alkyl acrylate where alkyl is of not more than 8 carbon atoms, and B) from 0 to 20 parts by weight of an elastomer component which has a glass transition temperature ? 0.degree.C, the sum of the number of parts by weight being 100. This thermoplastic molding material possesses sufficiently high heat distortion resistance coupled with good resistance to chemicals and well balanced mechanical properties.

Abstract: The invention is concerned with a process for the manufacture of a styrene polymer modified with rubber to improve its impact strength, by polymerizing styrene in the presence of 1 to 20% by weight, based on styrene, of rubber in at least two stages, wherein, in a first stage, the styrene, which contains the rubber in solution, is prepolymerized at from 50 to 150.degree.C in the presence or absence of inert diluents, while breaking up the disperse soft-component phase which forms during the polymerization by shearing the polymerization mixture until the quantity of styrene converted, based on the starting solution to be polymerized, corresponds to from 3 to 10 times the amount of elastomer constituent of the total amount of rubber employed and the particles of the disperse soft component phase thus formed have a mean diameter of less than 6 .mu.m, and thereafter, in one or more further stages, the polymerization is completed by taking it to the desired conversion with reduced shearing or entirely without shearing, in mass, in solution or in aqueous suspension. The process of the invention is characterized in that the shearing during prepolymerization is carried out in such a way that the particles have a weight-average mean diameter of less than 1 .mu.m and a narrow particle-size distribution, and the disperse soft-component phase contains, during the prepolymerization, from 35 to 65% by weight of free or chemically bonded polystyrene segments being incorporated into the rubber component in a chemically bonded form as a polymer block or a grafted branch, the segments having a number-average molecular weight of at least 30,000. The styrene polymers obtained exhibit not only high impact strength but also improved transparency, and may be used for packaging purposes.
