Abstract: A method for making aqueous copolymer dispersions by radical emulsion polymerisation using the monomer feed method, in which the monomers comprise 70-99.5 wt% alpha ,beta -mono-unsaturated monomers (A), 0.5-30 wt% polyfunctional comonomers (B) and optionally up to 5 wt% alpha ,beta -mono-unsaturated 3-6C mono- or di-carboxylic acids and/or amides (C), and at least 60 wt% of the total amount of (B) is added after at least 60 wt% of the total amount of all monomers has been added. A method for the production of aqueous copolymer dispersions (I) by radical-initiated emulsion polymerisation of unsaturated monomers in presence of dispersants and radical initiators using the monomer-feed method, in which the monomers used comprise 70-99.5 wt% alpha ,beta -mono-unsaturated compounds (monomers A), 0.5-30 wt% compounds with at least two copolymerisable unsaturated groups (B) and optionally up to 5 wt% alpha ,beta -mono-unsaturated 3-6C mono- or di-carboxylic acids and/or amides, and at least 60 wt% of the total amount of (B) is added under polymerisation conditions after at least 60 wt% of the total amount of all monomers has been added. Independent claims are included for (1) aqueous copolymer dispersions obtained by this method (2) copolymer powders obtained by drying these dispersions .

Abstract: Sandy soil is stabilised by treatment with a combination of a film-forming polymer and a cement with a water-binding capacity of at least 50 wt% and/or an early strength value (after 12 hours) which is at least 30% of the final strength. A method for stabilising sandy soil (I) involves incorporating into the soil (i) a finely-divided, water-insoluble, film-forming polymer (P) with a minimum film-forming temperature (MFT) of not above 30[deg]C in amounts of 0.1-10 wt% based on the solid content of (I), and (ii) 0.5-10 wt% of cement with a water-binding capacity of at least 50 wt% and/or an early strength value (DIN EN 196-1; at 20[deg]C after 12 hours) which is at least 30% of the final strength.
