Abstract: Process for the production of a planar, multilayered magneto- optical recording material having (A) an optically transparent dimensionally stable substrate, (B) a thermally alterable recording layer of an amorphous lanthanide/transition metal alloy and - at least on that side of the recording layer (B) which faces away from the substrate (A) - having (C) a single-stratum or multistratum layer containing carbides, nitrides and/or oxides, in which the layer (C) is produced on one or both sides of the recording layer (B) by (I) applying a 30 to 500 nm thick layer (C1) of (C11) two or more components which (C12) are present in three or more separate element and element carbide, nitride and oxide strata, each consisting of one or more of the components, (C13) the component(s) of the element stratum or strata being selected from the group comprising the elements B, Al, Ga, In, Si, Ge, Sn, Pb, Sb, Bi, Mg, Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, W, Fe, Co, Zn, Cd, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu and Th and (C14) the component(s) of the element carbide, nitride and oxide stratum or strata being selected from the group comprising the carbides, nitrides and oxides of these elements (C13) and (C15) directly adjacent strata of carbides, nitrides and/or oxides (C14) having different compositions, (C16) at least two of the strata consisting of carbides, nitrides and/or oxides (C14) being separated from one another by at least one 0.1 to 30 nm thick stratum consisting of at least one of the elements (C13) and (C17) the stratum directly adjacent to the recording layer (B) or the stratum facing said layer always consisting of carbides, nitrides and/or oxides (C14), and by (II) reacting the stratum or strata of the layer (C1) which consists or consist of at least one of the elements (C13) with oxygen, nitrogen and/or carbon, after which the recording layer (B) is magnetised at right angles to its surface.

Abstract: A flat, multilayer laser optical recording material comprising a dimensionally stable support and a thin, thermally modifiable recording layer consisting of Au and at least one metal chosen from Ru, Rh, Pd, Ag, Cu, Re, Os, Ir and Pt, the recording layer satisfying the following conditions: (a) it completely covers the underlying surface; (b) it contains 15-85 wt% Au w.r.t. the total layer, the Au being in predominantly non-alloyed form in a separate phase; (c) it exhibits a surface granularity with an ave. grain size of 10-200 nm; (d) the ave. layer depth d=5-300 nm where d=(dmin + dmax)/2 in which dmin= the ave. thickness of 10 fo the thinnest positions and dmax = the ave. thickness of 10 of the thickest positions on the recording layer; and (e) it is formed by at least 2-stage coating of the surface alernately with Au and with at least one of the other metals.
