Abstract: Amides are prepared from the corresponding ketones by heating the ketone together with hydroxylamine, an acylating agent and a Beckmann transforming agent, e.g. sulphuric acid. The process is particularly applicable to the preparation of lactams from cyclic ketones. Acetic anhydride is a suitable acylating agent but instead of hydroxylamine and an acylating agent a reaction product thereof, e.g. acethydroxamic acid or its acetate, may be used. Acetic acid or a chloracetic acid may be present. The temperature is preferably from 120 DEG to 140 DEG C. Examples are given of the preparation of caprolactam by heating cyclohexanone with hydroxylamine sulphate, acetic or chloracetic acid, and acetic anhydride with or without additional sulphuric acid; and by heating cyclohexanone with acethydroxamic acid acetate, acetic acid and acetic anhydride. A further example shows the production of N-isopropylisobutyramide from di-isopropyl ketone, hydroxylamine sulphate, acetic acid, acetic anhydride and sulphuric acid. Similarly benzophenone may be converted into benzanilide, diethyl ketone into propionethylamide and cycloheptanone into the corresponding lactam. Specification 750,222 is referred to.
