Abstract: A process for the polymerization of #x-caprolactam comprises heating #x-caprolactam in the presence of (a) alkaline catalyst, (b) an N : N1-diacyl bis-#x-caprolactam having the general formula where R is the divalent hydrocarbon radical of a dicarboxylic acid HOOC-R-COOH and contains at least six carbon atoms, and (c) a polyamine containing two or more primary or secondary amine groups per molecule or a polyol containing two or more hydroxyl groups per molecule, the N : N-diacyl-bis-#x-caprolactam being used in a molar excess over the polyamine or polyol. Specified catalysts are sodium, sodium hydroxide, potassium and potassium hydroxide. Specified N : N1 - diacyl - bis - #x - caprolactams are N : N1 - terephaloyl- and N : N1 - sebacoyl - bis - #x -caprolactam. Specified polyamines are hexamethylene diamine, piperazine, diethylene triamine, triethylene tetramine, bis-(3-aminopropyl)-amine, triamino benzene, bis-(p-aminophenyl)-amine, and polyamido amines. Specified polyols are diethylene glycol, trimethylol propane, polyethylene glycol and polypropylene glycol.

Abstract: Diepoxy acetals having the general formula in which R is hydrogen or a methyl radical and R1 is a methyl radical, may be cured by reaction with polybasic acids or anhydrides. Other epoxides and/or polyols may be added to the diepoxy-acetal acid or anhydride mixture to produce cross-linked polymers. Examples are given of the preparation of resins from the diepoxide of the formula given above in which R and R1 are methyl groups, phthalic anhydride and ethylene glycol. Specification 887,593 is referred to.ALSO:The invention comprises diepoxy acetals having the general formula in which R is hydrogen or a methyl radical and R1 is a methyl radical. They may be produced by condensing in the presence of an acid catalyst pentaerythritol and 2-methyl-D 4-tetrahydrobenzaldehyde or a mixture of tetrahydrobenzaldehyde and 2-methyl-D 4-tetrahydrobenzaldehyde and epoxidising the reaction product with peracetic acid. Abstract: A process for the production of unsaturated polyesters capable of being cured alone or copolymerized with vinyl monomers, comprises esterifying an unsaturated glycol of the formula in which R is the residue of a dihydric phenol, which is defined so as to include bis-phenols, with a stoichiometric equivalent of a dibasic acid or anhydride. The glycol may be esterified with an unsaturated acid or anhydride, e.g. maleic anhydride, or with a mixture of saturated and unsaturated acids or anhydrides. Alternatively a mixture of the unsaturated glycol and a saturated acid may be esterified. In examples an unsaturated glycol derived from diphenylol propane as dihydric phenol is esterified with maleic anhydride and a mixture of the unsaturated glycol and propylene glycol is also esterified with maleic anhydride. Unsaturated polyester resins. Resins are prepared by heating the unsaturated polyesters described above either alone or together with one or more other olefinic monomers, e.g. styrene and its homologues and esters of acrylic or methacrylic acid or vinyl alcohol, in the presence of a free radical catalyst, e.g. di-t-butyl benzoyl or MEK peroxide or cumene or t-butyl hydroperoxide, and optionally promomotors, e.g. tertiary amines or cobalt naphthanate. In examples the maleate polyester described above is homopolymerized and the mixed maleate polyester described above is copolymerized with styrene.ALSO:The invention comprises an unsaturated glycol of the formula in which R is the residue of a dihydric phenol HO.R.OH which is defined as a compound containing two hydroxyl groups attached to the same aromatic nucleus or a compound containing a hydroxyl group attached to each of two aromatic nuclei in a compound having at least two aromatic nuclei, and a process for their preparation by reacting 1-vinyl-3,4-epoxy-cyclohexane with a dihydric phenol in a mole ratio of at least 2 : 1. In an example diphenylpropane is reacted in the presence of benzyl trimethyl ammonium hydroxide.

Abstract: High molecular weight linear polyesters are made by heating to a temperature at which polyesterification occurs a free dicarboxylic acid with a cyclic glycol carbonate, preferably in the presence of an ester-interchange catalyst, until the reaction mixture becomes substantially homogeneous, adding as a second-stage catalyst an organic acid salt of manganese or antimony, or a salt in which antimony, zinc or aluminium is present in the anion, and thereafter heating the resulting composition until a high linear polyester has been formed. The process may be effected as described in Specification 707,913 or 764,964. The second stage catalyst may be added to the reaction mixture as a powdered solid or dispersed in a liquid, e.g. a glycol, a mixture of glycol and water or a mixture of a cyclic glycol carbonate and water. Specified polycarboxylic acids are adipic, terephthalic, substituted terephthalic, diphenyl-4,41-dicarboxylic, a ,o - diphenylalkane - 4,41 - dicarboxylic and a ,o - dipheboxyalkane - 4,41 - dicarboxylic acids. Specified cyclic carbonates are ethylene, propylene and trimethylene glycol carbonates. Specified second-stage catalysts are manganous acetate, antimony potassium tartrate, alkali metal antimonates and alkali and alkaline earth metal aluminates or zincates. Examples describe the making of fibre-forming polyethylene terephthalate from terephthalic acid and ethylene carbonating using sodium terephthalate and magnesium ribbon as an ester-interchange catalyst and manganous acetate as a secondstage catalyst. Abstract: A linear polyester is made by condensing a dicarboxylic acid with a cyclic glycol carbonate in amount, for example, of 1 to 2 mols. per mol. of the acid. The condensation may be effected at 200 DEG to 250 DEG C in the initial stages, and at 250 DEG to 300 DEG C. in the later stages, and preferably under reduced pressure. Esterification catalysts such as sodium, potassium, magnesium, sodium and magnesium or lithium, or the alkoxides thereof, may be used. The acid may be reacted with two or more glycol carbonates or one glycol carbonate and free glycol. Acids specified are: adipic, suberic, sebacic, p-phenylene diacetic and terephthalic acids; di-phenyl-4.41-, a b -diphenylethane-4.41-, a d -diphenylbutane-4.41-, a b -diphenoxyethane-4.41-, a d -diphenoxybutane-4.41-, and 1.5-, 2.6- and 2.7-naphthalene-dicarboxylic acids. Cyclic glycol carbonates specified are the ethylene, trimethylene and propylene compounds. In examples, fibre-forming polymers having cold drawing properties are made from terephthalic acid and cyclic ethylene glycol carbonate.

Abstract: N,N1 - diacyl - bis - caprolactams of the formula where R is (CH2)n and n is at least 5 are used as activators in the alkaline polymerization of lactams. The process of Specification 1,063,292 which uses such activators wherein n is at least 6 in conjunction with a polyamine or polyol is disclaimed. In examples the effectiveness of the activators in the polymerization of caprolactam is compared with that of similar compounds where n is less than 5. The actuators may be prepared as described in Specification 1,102,521.
