Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of manufacturing a long and narrow glass product effectively. SOLUTION: The narrow glass products is manufactured as follows: a tubular glass handle is provided with a mandrel on its end part, and an assembly of the mandrel and the glass tube is rotated and reciprocated in a flow of glass particle composed of SiO2 doped with at least 15 wt.% B2O3, while blowing the glass particle to the end part of the mandrel and the tube, and forming porous glass coating, then the mandrel is removed, the assembly of the handle and a tubular porous preform is formed. The tubular porous preform is heated and consolidated so as to form a close packed glass preform having an axial hole, and fused on the handle, while keeping temperature higher than 600 deg.C but lower than the temperature that effectively expands the preform, and making flow NF3 in the hole.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress a spectral change caused by a temp. change and to make an optical waveguide athermal by blending constituent components of the waveguide with boron. SOLUTION: An optical waveguide having reduced temp. dependency is produced by doping a waveguide with a refractive index varying dopant capable of optical waveguide and doping the waveguide with a temp. dependence suppressing dopant which reduces the temp. dependency of the waveguide. The objective optical waveguide device contains an optical waveguide silica core doped with a refractive index increasing dopant and a sufficient amt. of an additional dopant made of B2 O3 and suppresses a thermal spectral change in the device due to a temp. change. The refractive index increasing dopant is preferably GeO2 . The optical waveguide device includes a transmission filter including a long-period fiber lattice and Mach-zehnder interferometer. The optical waveguide device is e.g. an optical waveguide tube, an optical fiber or a Mach-zehnder coupler device.

Abstract: Athermalized optical waveguide devices and methods of making the athermalized devices are described. Boron is incorporated into the composition of the optical waveguides in order to athermalize the waveguides by reducing spectral shifts caused by changes in temperature. Abstract: A method is described for making a low reflectance optical fiber end termination. This comprises providing a region of uncoated glass optical fiber having a predetermined diameter and a first end, and heating the fiber at a location remote from the first end. The fiber is then pulled on opposite sides of the heated location to sever the end of the fiber, thereby leaving on the optical fiber a tapered end section. The end of said tapered section is further heated to lower the viscosity of the material thereof by an amount sufficient to cause the material to recede back along the fiber and form a rounded end thereon. An apparatus for carrying out this method is also described.

Abstract: There is initially formed a draw blank having diametrically opposed longitudinal apertures in the cladding glass parallel to the core glass region. The draw blank is drawn into a fiber under such conditions that the apertures close as the fiber is being drawn. The flow of surrounding glass, including the core glass region, toward the collapsing apertures, causes the core to assume an elliptical shape. The apertures are of such cross-sectional area and spacing from the core that the core develops the desired aspect ratio.

Abstract: Disclosed is a method of forming a doped glass article. Heated glass particles are deposited on a mandrel where they adhere together to form a porous glass preform having interconnective pores. The mandrel is removed to form a tubular preform having an axial aperture. The preform is suspended in a consolidation furnace by a gas conducting handle having a dopant containing chamber. As the handle and preform are heated, there is flowed through the chamber a gas that reacts with the heated dopant to form a reactant gas that flows into the aperture and into pores, whereby a dopant is incorporated into the porous glass preform. The doped preform is heat treated to consolidate it into an elongated non-porous glass body containing the dopant. The glass body can be provided with cladding glass and drawn into an optical fiber.
