Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problems of waveguide phase matching and of coupler length tolerance which are caused when a 'rod' and 'tube' waveguides are used in a single-fiber filter device. SOLUTION: In a method of manufacturing a coaxial optical coupler, a rod-like core member is arranged in a tube, and then, the tube is collapsed on at least a part of the length of the rod-like core member, forming a coaxial coupler equipped with a core waveguide inside a ring waveguide. The core member is composed of at least that part of the core waveguide for which a refractive index is enhanced and at least a part of the tube is made of glass having a smaller refractive index than the part of the core waveguide.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress a spectral change caused by a temp. change and to make an optical waveguide athermal by blending constituent components of the waveguide with boron. SOLUTION: An optical waveguide having reduced temp. dependency is produced by doping a waveguide with a refractive index varying dopant capable of optical waveguide and doping the waveguide with a temp. dependence suppressing dopant which reduces the temp. dependency of the waveguide. The objective optical waveguide device contains an optical waveguide silica core doped with a refractive index increasing dopant and a sufficient amt. of an additional dopant made of B2 O3 and suppresses a thermal spectral change in the device due to a temp. change. The refractive index increasing dopant is preferably GeO2 . The optical waveguide device includes a transmission filter including a long-period fiber lattice and Mach-zehnder interferometer. The optical waveguide device is e.g. an optical waveguide tube, an optical fiber or a Mach-zehnder coupler device.

Abstract: The fibre-optic coupler includes two optical fibres which fibres which are fused together along a portion of their lengths to form a wavelength dependent coupling region. Most of the light power of a wavelength lambda S couples between them, and most of the light power of a wavelength lambda P that is introduced into the first fibre remains in it. The mode field diameter of the first coupler fibre is matched to that of the gain fibre and is smaller than that of the second coupler fibre. One end of the first coupler fibre is spliced to the gain fibre. The difference in mode field diameters between the couplers is sufficient create a difference in coupler fibre propagation constants in the coupling region which degrades the coupling of the lambda S signal. To overcome the difference in coupler fibre propagation constants in the coupling region, and thereby increase the coupled signal power to an acceptable level, a fibre characteristic, whose affect on MFD is insignificant, is modified in one of the coupler fibres.

Abstract: A fiber optic coupler comprising a plurality of single-mode optical fibers, each of which is tapered to form a small diameter section that extends in contiguous relationship with the small diameter sections of the other fibers to form a coupling region. Each of the fibers has a core surrounded by a cladding of refractive index lower than that of the core. At least one of the fibers has a refractive index pedestal of refractive index ni between said core and cladding, wherein n1>ni>n2, n1 and n2 being the refractive indices of the core and cladding, respectively.

Abstract: An achromatic fiber optic coupler of the type wherein a plurality of single-mode optical fibers, each having a core and a cladding, are fused together along a portion of the lengths thereof to form a coupling region. The propagation constants of the fibers are preferably equal; however if the fiber claddings have different refractive indices, the lowest cladding refractive index is n2. A matrix glass body of refractive index n3 surrounds the coupling region, n3 being lower than n2 by such an amount that the value of DELTA 2-3 is less than 0.125%, wherein DELTA 2-3 equals (n2 n3 )/2n2 .

Abstract: An achromatic fiber optic coupler of the type wherein first and second single-mode optical fibers, each having a core and a cladding, are fused together along a portion of the lengths thereof to form a coupling region. A matrix glass of lower index than the fiber claddings surrounds the coupling region. The fiber diameters are smaller in the coupling region than in the the remainder of the fibers. The refractive index n2 of the cladding of the first fiber is different from the refractive index n'_2 of the cladding of the second fiber, the difference between the refractive indices n2 and n'_2 being such that the coupler exhibits very little change in coupling ratio with wavelength over a band of wavelengths.

Abstract: Disclosed is a mode field modifier (40) which can be used in a fiber-to-fiber connector or a source-to-fiber connector. In a downtaper-type mode field modifier embodiment, the modifier comprises a modifier core (42) of refractive index n1 surrounded by first and second cladding layers (44, 46) having refractive indices n2 and n3, respectively. In an uptaper-type mode field modifier (60) embodiment, the modifier comprises a modifier core (56) of refractive index n1 surrounded by a cladding layer (58) having a refractive index n2. The refractive indices are such that n1 > n2 > n3. In both embodiments, there is a nonadiabatic taper (N, N ) intermediate the ends of the mode field modifier, whereby a substantial amount of mode coupling occurs therein.
