    Abstract: A semiconductor laser having an external cavity including a single-mode optical fiber (40). A Bragg grating (42) is written onto the fiber (40) whic h defines the end of the optical cavity, selects the lasing wavelength, and discriminates against the lasing of higher-order transverse modes in the mul ti- mode gain region. The system includes an optically active medium (28) with a mirror (22) attached to a first end, and optics (26) for coupling the multi- mode output from the second end of the active medium into the single-mode fiber (40). The active medium may be optically pumped (32) and may comprise a solid state laser rod or a semiconductor diode.

    Abstract: An optically active fiber ( 30 ) is disclosed for making a fiber laser ( 18 ) or an amplifier ( 16 ) for optically pumping by a broad area laser diode for operation in the 1.5 micron band. This double-clad structured active fiber ( 30 ) has a core ( 34 ), doped with an optically excitable erbium ion having a quasi-three-level transition. The core ( 3 ) has a core refractive index and a core cross-sectional area. An inner cladding ( 32 ) surrounds the core ( 34 ). The inner cladding ( 32 ) has an inner cladding refractive index less than the core refractive index, an inner cladding cross-sectional area between 2 and 25 times greater than that of the core cross-sectional area, and an aspect ratio greater than 1.5:1. An outer cladding ( 36 ) surrounds the inner cladding ( 32 ) and has an outer cladding refractive index less than the inner cladding refractive index.

    Abstract: A multi-stage optical fiber amplifier comprises a first gain stage amplifying and optical signal; a pumping source coupled to the first gain stage, a second gain stage coupled to the first gain to further amplifying the optical signal to a desired output signal power, and a second pumping source coupled to the second gain stage. The second pumping source is preferably an erbium-doped fiber laser and has an operating wavelength between about 1520 nm and about 1620 nm. This amplifier achieves good noise figure and high output powers.

    Abstract: An optical fiber with a core of non-circular cross-section is realized by a method including the steps of creating a void having the desired cross-secti on in a preform housing and filling the void with an optical material. This structure is then collapsed to solidify it and drawn to desired dimensions. The optical material may be rods, soot or ground material. An active region which may be provided in the core does not necessarily have a different refractive index than that of immediately adjacent material. The active regi on of the drawn fiber may only support oscillation in the fundamental transvers e mode. The fiber drawn by the method disclosed may be used to convert multi- mode pump light into single mode light, e.g., for pumping a single mode amplifier.
