    Abstract: A detergent composition comprises one or more compounds which evolve active oxygen, e.g. perborates, percarbonates, perphosphates and peroxides, and one or more activators having the formula in which R1 which may be substituted is an alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, alkylaryl or aralkyl group in the 1-position and R2 is an acetyl group in the 3-position. Specified activators are 1 phenyl - 3 - acetyl hydantoin, 1 - o - tolyl - 3 - acetylhydantoin 1 - m - tolyl - 3 - acetyl hydantoin, 1 -p-tolyl-3-acetyl hydantoin, 1 cyclohexyl - 3- acetyl hydantoin, 1 - benzyl - 3 - acetylhydantoin and 1-methyl - 3 - acetyl hydantoin. The composition may also contain tetrapropylene benzene sulphonate, sodium pyrophosphate, sodium tripolyphosphate and water-glass.ALSO:Compounds having the formula in which R1 is an alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, alkylaryl or aralkyl group, e.g. a methyl, phenyl, o-tolyl, m-tolyl, p-tolyl, benzyl or cyclohexyl group, and R2 is an acetyl group, are prepared by the reaction of acetic anhydride with the corresponding hydantoin in which R2 is hydrogen. The compounds may be used as activators for compounds which evolve active oxygen in detergents and bleaching compositions.ALSO:Textiles, e.g. viscose rayon, are washed and bleached by treating them with a solution of a composition comprising one or more compounds which evolve active oxygen, e.g. perborates, percarbonates, perphosphates and peroxides, and one or more activators having the formula in which R1 which may be substituted is an alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, alkylaryl or aralkyl group in the 1-position and R2 is an acetyl group in the 3-position. Specified activators are 1-phenyl-3-acetyl hydantoin, 1-o-tolyl-3-acetylhydantion, 1-m-tolyl-3-acetyl hydantoin, 1 - p - tolyl - 3 - acetyl hydantoin, 1 - cyclohexyl - 3 - acetyl hydantoin, 1 - benzyl - 3 - acetylhydantoin and 1 - methyl - 3 - acetyl - hydantoin. The composition may also contain tetra-propylene benzene sulphonate, sodium pyrophosphate, sodium tripolyphosphate and water-glass. The treatment may be effected at 60 DEG C.
