    Abstract: A detergent composition comprises one or more compounds which evolve active oxygen, e.g. perborates, percarbonates, perphosphates and peroxides, and one or more activators having the formula in which R1 which may be substituted is an alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, alkylaryl or aralkyl group in the 1-position and R2 is an acetyl group in the 3-position. Specified activators are 1 phenyl - 3 - acetyl hydantoin, 1 - o - tolyl - 3 - acetylhydantoin 1 - m - tolyl - 3 - acetyl hydantoin, 1 -p-tolyl-3-acetyl hydantoin, 1 cyclohexyl - 3- acetyl hydantoin, 1 - benzyl - 3 - acetylhydantoin and 1-methyl - 3 - acetyl hydantoin. The composition may also contain tetrapropylene benzene sulphonate, sodium pyrophosphate, sodium tripolyphosphate and water-glass.ALSO:Compounds having the formula in which R1 is an alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, alkylaryl or aralkyl group, e.g. a methyl, phenyl, o-tolyl, m-tolyl, p-tolyl, benzyl or cyclohexyl group, and R2 is an acetyl group, are prepared by the reaction of acetic anhydride with the corresponding hydantoin in which R2 is hydrogen. The compounds may be used as activators for compounds which evolve active oxygen in detergents and bleaching compositions.ALSO:Textiles, e.g. viscose rayon, are washed and bleached by treating them with a solution of a composition comprising one or more compounds which evolve active oxygen, e.g. perborates, percarbonates, perphosphates and peroxides, and one or more activators having the formula in which R1 which may be substituted is an alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, alkylaryl or aralkyl group in the 1-position and R2 is an acetyl group in the 3-position. Specified activators are 1-phenyl-3-acetyl hydantoin, 1-o-tolyl-3-acetylhydantion, 1-m-tolyl-3-acetyl hydantoin, 1 - p - tolyl - 3 - acetyl hydantoin, 1 - cyclohexyl - 3 - acetyl hydantoin, 1 - benzyl - 3 - acetylhydantoin and 1 - methyl - 3 - acetyl - hydantoin. The composition may also contain tetra-propylene benzene sulphonate, sodium pyrophosphate, sodium tripolyphosphate and water-glass. The treatment may be effected at 60 DEG C.

    Abstract: Detergent compositions suitable for washing and bleaching fibres, yarns, woven or knitted fabrics or textiles consisting of natural or synthetic fibrous materials, e.g. cotton/wool fabrics, comprise an inorganic peroxidic compound, e.g. sodium perborate, and an activator which is a reaction product of a phosphonic acid ester or of a phosphinic acid with an acylating agent. Suitable activators are benzoyl benzenephosphonic acid ethyl ester, O-benzoyl benzenephosphonic acid phenyl ester, O-benzoyl styryl phosphonic acid monophenyl ester, O-benzoyl diphenyl phosphinic acid and O-benzoyl di-n-butylphosphinic acid. The compositions, which may contain 0.1-1 mol. of the activator per mol. of active oxygen in the composition, may also contain stabilizers, buffer substances, fibre-protecting agents and optical brighteners. In the examples, the compositions contain in addition to sodium perborate and the activator, an alkyl sulphate comprising mainly dodecyl sulphate, sodium pyrophosphate, sodium tripolyphosphate and water glass.ALSO:Fibres, yarns, woven or knitted fabrics or textiles consisting of natural or synthetic fibrous materials, e.g. cotton wool fabrics, are washed and bleached by treating them with an aqueous solution or suspension containing an inorganic peroxidic compound, e.g. sodium perborate, and an activator which is a reaction product of a phosphoric acid ester or of a phosphinic acid with an acylating agent. Suitable activators are benzoyl benzenephosphonic acid ethyl ester, o-benzoyl benzenephosphonic acid phenyl ester, o-benzoyl styryl phosphanic acid monophenyl ester, o-benzoyl diphenyl-phosphinic acid and o-benzoyl di-n-butylphosphinic acid. The treating composition, which may contain 0.1-1 mol of the activator per mol of active oxygen in the composition, may also contain stabilisers, buffer substances, wetting agents, detergents, fibre-protecting agents and optical brighteners. The treatment may be effected at 30-60 DEG C. Mixtures of the activators with the inorganic peroxidic compounds have good stability on storage at normal temperatures even in the presence of the other detergent composition components normally used. In the Examples the treating compositions contain in addition to sodium perborate and the activator, an alkylsulphate comprising mainly dodecyl sulphate, sodium pyrophosphate, sodium tripolyphosphate and water glass.
