Abstract: A dry-charged lead acid storage battery has partially recharged electrodes which serve as a source of sulfate ions. An additional source of sulfate ions is also inside the battery container. In contrast to the partially or fully discharged electrodes in previous dry batteries, the electrodes of this invention are characterized by having active material in which the percent of lead sulfate in the active material at a specified distance from the center of the electrode grid decreases as the specified distance of the material from the grid decreases. These improved electrodes are produced by being fully charged, then completely discharged, then partially recharged, and then washed and dried.

Abstract: A storage battery cell has positive and negative plates flooded by electrolyte. When the battery is charged, gas bubbles are produced in the electrolyte. Baffles are arranged to segregate the hydrogen gas bubbles evolved by a portion of the negative plates from oxygen bubbles formed by the positive plates. A hydrogen gas consuming electrode is submerged in the electrolyte and is located so that a stream of hydrogen bubbles impinges thereon. The gas electrode produces an electric current as a result of the presence of hydrogen and the current is approximately proportional to the quantity of gas impinging on the electrode. When the cell reaches a fully charged state, there is a rapid increase in the rate of gas evolution from the negative plate. This causes a similar increase in the current produced by the electrode. A current sensitive device is used to monitor the current flow and initiate a charge termination sequence when the battery reaches a fully charged state as indicated by the gas electrode. An oxygen consuming electrode may be arranged in a similar fashion to sense the oxygen evolution of the positive plates. A pre-selected rise in current flow from positive gas electrode to negative gas electrode can likewise be used to indicate that both positive and negative plates are fully charged.

Abstract: A THIN ELECTRODE IS PREPARED BY: (A) MIXING TOGETHER A RANEY CATALYST-ALLOY, AN OXIDE OF SILVER, AND A BINDER; (B) SHAPING THE MIXTURE ONTO A THIN CONDUCTIVE GRID; (C) REDUCING THE OXIDE OF SILVER OF METALLIC SILVER; (D) DISSOLVING THE SOLUBLE METAL FROM THE RANEY CATALYST-ALLOY; AND (E) BURNING THE STRUCTURE TO REMOVE THE BINDER AND TO SINTER THE CATALYST AND SILVER TOGETHER WITH EACH OTHER AND WITH THE GRID. PREFERABLY STEPS (C) AND (D) ARE COMBINED BY IMMERSING THE SHAPED STRUCTURE IN A REDUCING-DISSOLVING SOLUTION SUCH AS AQUEOUS FORMALDEHYDR-POTASSIUM HYDROXIDE SOLUTION. IN STEP (E) THE BINDER ACTS AS THE FUEL FOR THE SINTERING. WATER AND HYDROGEN ABSORBED BY THE STRUCTURE DURING STEPS (C) AND (D) FUNCTION TO KEEP THE TEMPERATURE OF THE SINTERING STEP LOW SO THAT THE SILVER PARTICLES DO NOT COALESCE, AND TO SUPPRESS AND INHIBIT OXIDATION OF THE CATALYST. STEP (E) MAY BE PERFORMED IN OPEN AIR WITH ANY CONVENIENT FLAME.
