Abstract: PATCHES OF ADHESIVE ARE IMPREGNATED INTO BATTERY SEPARATOR MATERIAL, EACH PATCH BEING IN THE FORM OF A CLOSED LOOP INSIDE OF WHICH IS AN AREA OF SEPARATOR MATERIAL NOT IMPREGNATED WITH THE ADHESIVE. ELECTROLYTE IS THEN IMPREGNATED INTO THE AREA INSIDE EACH PATCH OF ADHESIVE, AFTER WHICH THE SEPARATOR SEGMENTS ARE ASSEMBLED INTO BATTERIES WHERE THE ADHESIVE PATCHES SERVE AS SEALS.

PREFERABLY THE ADHESIVE PATCHES ARE NONCONDUCTIVE AND ARE IMPREGNATED ALONG CONTINOUS STRIPS OF SEPARATOR MATERIAL, AND A FURTHER PREFERENCE IS TO ASSEMBLE THE SEPARATOR SEGMENTS INTO THE BATTERIES WHICH ARE STRUCURALLY CONNECTED TOGETHER BY THE CONTINUOUS STRIPS. AFTER ASSEMBLY OF THE BATTERIES THE CONTINUOUS STRIPS MAY BE CUT BETWEEN PATCHES OF ADHESIVE TO OBTAIN STRUCTURALLY UNCONNECTED BATTERIES.

Abstract: A PROCESS IS PROVIDED FOR ENCAPSULATING DEVICES THAT MAY BE IMPLANTED IN THE BODY WITHOUT CAUSING UNFAVORABLE REACTIONS IN AND REJECTION BY THE BODY. AN EXAMPLE OF A DEVICE WHICH MAY BE ENCAPSULATED BY THE PROCESS IS A HEART PACER. THE PROCESS INCLUDES PURIFICATION OF THE EPOXY RESIN, PREPARATION OF AN AMINE-EPOXY HARDENER, AND CONTROLLING THE CURING CONDITIONS OF THE MIXTURE OF HARDENER AND RESIN.

Abstract: 1357805 Laminates ESB Inc 29 July 1971 [14 Sept 1970] 35791/71 Heading B5N [Also in Division H1] A metal is bonded to an organic polymeric material by bringing the surfaces of the metal and organic polymeric material into intimate contact with an adhesive interposed between the surfaces, heating the adhesive mixture to a melt condition to wet the surfaces and allowing the adhesive mixture to cool in contact with the surfaces, the adhesive comprising 10-70% by weight of an olefinic interpolymer of ethylene or propylene and at least one comonomer which is a vinyl alkanoate or alkyl ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid, the comonomer constituting 15-50% by weight of the olefinic interpolymer, 25-50% by weight of a resin incorporating a carboxylic acid group and capable of fluxing the metal surface and 5-40% by weight of hydrocarbon wax or a fatty acid which has a melting point of 60-85‹ C. or oleic acid. The organic polymer to be bonded may be a polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, polymethyl methacrylate, polyvinyl chloride or polytetrafluoro ethylene, and the metal may be lead, zinc, iron, lead alloy, stainless steel, aluminium, copper, nickel or silver. The resin incorporating a carboxylic acid group may be rosin or a resin derived from maleic anhydride or fumaric acid, the hydrocarbon wax may be polyethylene or paraffin wax and the fatty acid may be stearic acid. The adhesive may also contain anti-oxidant stabilizers, e.g. hydroquinone monomethyl ether, 2,6 - ditertbutyl phenol and 1,3,5 - trimethyl - 2,4,6- tris (3,5 - ditert - butyl - 4 - hydroxy benzyl) benzene.
