Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a data processor which performs the operation load management regarding a group of servers of asynchronous client/server computing system. SOLUTION: This data processor has a means which receives 21 an operation request from a client application, a means which is a means for selecting 23 a specific server in a group used to comply with the received operation request according to investigated available data and uses the investigated availability always in the current state when receiving the operation request irrelevantly to whether or not available data regarding the respective servers in the group are received so as to select a server from the group, and a means which puts the received operation request in a transmission queue for transmission to the specific server in the group.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To gain access to resources held by other data processing units by allowing a resource manager to have a mutual communication through a network so as to establish the agreement that a specific name will be used as a 1st or 2nd name so as to represent a specific resources in a future communication.
SOLUTION: A group of data processing units 11 to 14 is interconnected through the network 10 to which those data processing units are connected. An application A and an application B connected to the resource manager 131 can request access to resources 142 held by another data processing unit 14. The resource manager 141 of the data processing unit 14 interacts with the resource manager 131 of the data processing unit 13 so as to adjust a request for access to the resource held by the data processing unit 14.

Abstract: Messages from a client application 111 are placed in a queue 112b for subsequent transmission to a selected one of a number of servers 121-123. The server to which each message is to be sent is determined when the message is placed into the queue, based on the server availability data known at that time and without waiting for availability data for each and every server. This eliminates an unnecessary source of delay. If the server availability data is updated before the message is transmitted, the server selection may be altered.

Abstract: A method, for use in a two-phase commit protocol, of reducing both the number of agents writing to a recovery log and the number of points in a transaction at which the log must guarantee the durability of data being processed is disclosed. If all of the agents involved in a transaction have access to the same log and if in a network it is relatively expensive to send a message, but there is little penalty for sending a long message compared to a short one, then improved performance can be obtained by sending both the data to be written to the log and the request commit flows in the same communications message. A commit request and log data are passed along a chain of agents, each agent adding its own contribution to the log data. Only the agent at the end of the chain logs this data.

Abstract: A communication network has a plurality of data processing units 11-14 connected such that one data processing unit can access a resource on another data processing unit. A first unit 13 communicates over the network with a second unit 14 to offer a potential agreement as to a name which will be used to identify a resource. The second unit accepts the agreement to use the name, and the first unit communicates over the network with the second unit using the name in order to carry out processing involving shared access to the resource. In this way the same names can be used amongst different sets of processing units.
