Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To gain access to resources held by other data processing units by allowing a resource manager to have a mutual communication through a network so as to establish the agreement that a specific name will be used as a 1st or 2nd name so as to represent a specific resources in a future communication.
SOLUTION: A group of data processing units 11 to 14 is interconnected through the network 10 to which those data processing units are connected. An application A and an application B connected to the resource manager 131 can request access to resources 142 held by another data processing unit 14. The resource manager 141 of the data processing unit 14 interacts with the resource manager 131 of the data processing unit 13 so as to adjust a request for access to the resource held by the data processing unit 14.

Abstract: In a distributed data processing system running multiple applications A1, A2, A3 located on a client system 4, resources specific to an application and which have no impact on the overall display at a server 2 are stored in application address space. Resources which have an effect on the overall system and which are managed in the client system are stored in protected, common, presentation address space in the client system. Resources which have an overall effect and are managed in the server system are stored in the display server system.

Abstract: The invention relates to the management of the window geometry or layout in a distributed data processing system. A client/server model is assumed with applications executing on client systems 10a, 10b and the graphics data being drawn on a server system 20a, 20b, 20c, 20d (where the end user is). The applications interact with the user by defining client windows 30a, 30b into which they place graphical data and from which they receive input entered by the user. They also define sub-windows (40a, 40b, fig 2) for action fields through which a user may enter data and access the applications. The client presentation layer only externalises to the server the minimum data needed for it to carry out its display responsibilities, remaining display data being stored in the client systems.

Abstract: A communication network has a plurality of data processing units 11-14 connected such that one data processing unit can access a resource on another data processing unit. A first unit 13 communicates over the network with a second unit 14 to offer a potential agreement as to a name which will be used to identify a resource. The second unit accepts the agreement to use the name, and the first unit communicates over the network with the second unit using the name in order to carry out processing involving shared access to the resource. In this way the same names can be used amongst different sets of processing units.
