Abstract: The present invention is directed to a multimedia data storage system for storing multimedia data including a media server which stores media data on a short-term basis, and a media archive which stores media data on a long-term basis relative to the media server. The media archive is connected to the media server, which operates as a cache device for the media archive, for transmission of media data between the media archive and the media server. According to the present invention, a volume of the media data stored in the media server is controlled based on user-defined parameters. The present invention is also directed to a method of managing a media server as a cache device for a media archive within a multimedia data storage system. The media server stores media data on a short-term basis, whereas the media archive stores media data on a long-term basis relative to the media server. The media archive is connected to the media server for transmission of media data therebetween. According to the present invention, the method of managing includes determining a volume of the media data stored in the media server and controlling the volume of the media data stored in the media server based on user-defined parameters. The present invention is also directed to a computer-readable medium of instructions to be implemented in a multimedia data storage system including a media server and a media archive. The media server stores media data on a short-term basis and the media archive stores media data on a long-term basis relative to the media server. The media archive is connected to the media server for transmission of media data therebetween. The inventive computer-readable medium of instructions includes means for determining a volume of the media data stored in the media server and means for controlling the volume of the media data stored in the media server based on user-defined parameters.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an enhanced technology that transmits video data. SOLUTION: The method of this invention is to convert video and audio into a streaming slide show. A video stored in a data storage connected to a computer is processed. First a video of a motion base consisting of image series is received. One picture or more is selected from the video of the motion base on the basis of a desired bandwidth for transmission. Then the streaming slide show is generated by using the selected picture.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a concentrated interface for remotely controlling media properties and scheduling a media operation implemented by a plurality of media servers in a computer network system and to provide a graphical user interface process. SOLUTION: Each server selectively activates a corresponding multi-media device, encodes the media data received from the corresponding multi-media device, and gains access to the corresponding memory device storing the media data. Each server receives user inputs including the server identification information indicating a selected server, the mode information indicating a selected operation mode, and the encoded operation information defined based on the selected operation mode. The commands and related parameters created based on the encoded operation information are transmitted to the selected server via the network.

The process starts with a step for displaying this graphical user interface on the display unit of the manager terminal and defines and schedules the operation to be executed to the corresponding part of medium data by a selected medium server.

Abstract: A method of converting motion based video to a streaming slide show comprising the steps of receiving the video as a series of images, selecting a number of images based on the desired bandwidth for transmission and generating a streaming slide show using the selected images. The video may further comprise audio which may be synchronised with the selected frames and the number of images selected may be determined according to a bit rate budget. Preferably the step of selecting images includes the steps of selecting candidate frames, ranking the candidate frames and then selecting from the candidate frames.

Abstract: A media streamer includes at least one storage node for storing a digital representation of a video presentation. The video presentation requires a time T to present in its entirety, and is stored as a plurality of N data blocks, each data block storing data corresponding approximately to a T/N period of the video presentation. The media streamer further includes a plurality of communication nodes each having at least one input port and at least one output port; a circuit switch connectedbetween the at least one storage node and input ports of the plurality of communication nodes, the circuit switch selectively coupling one or more of the input ports to the at least one storage node to enable the digital representation stored thereat to appear at one or more of the output ports; and at least one control node coupled at least to the plurality of communication nodes and to the at least onestorage node for enabling any one of the N blocks to appear at any output port of any of the plurality of communication nodes.

Abstract: A process is provided for managing operations including encoding operations in a network system including an administrator terminal, at least one server communicatively coupled to the administrator terminal via a computer network, and at least one multimedia device operative to generate media data and being communicatively coupled with a corresponding one of the servers. Each of the servers is operative to selectively activate the corresponding multimedia device, and is also operative to encode media data received from the corresponding multimedia device, and is further operative to access a corresponding memory device for storing media data. The process includes the steps of: displaying a graphical user interface including a server select interface component enabling a user of the administrator terminal to select one of the servers, and a mode select interface component enabling the user to select between a manual encoding mode of operation enabling the user to manually start arid stop a manual encoding process performed by a selected server, and a scheduled encoding mode of operation enabling the user to define a schedule for automatically starting and stopping a scheduled encoding process to be performed by a selected server. User input is received, the input including server identification information indicative of a selected server, mode information indicative of a selected mode of operation, and encoding operation information defined based on the selected mode of operation. Commands and associated parameters, generated based on the encoding operation information, are transmitted to the selected server via the network.
