Abstract: SWITCH-BASED PERSONAL COMPUTER INTERCONNECTION APPARATUS Disclosed is a modularly expandable switch-based apparatus which is used to interconnect multiple Personal Computers as nodes of a parallel system. The invention includes a bus-based expansion card which is inserted into a card slot in each of the Personal Computers to provide an adaptation from the Personal Computer MicroChannel to the interface to a multi-stage switch network. Thus, the disclosed invention provides a means for extending the MicroChannel architectures to either massively parallel systems or thousands of I/O device taps or a combination of the two. This is accomplished by using electronic switches to interconnect various Personal Computers, where each computer has a unique local bus that can be composed of 1 to 8 MicroChannel taps (card slots). An expansion card containing a bus architecture converter unit is used in one expansion card slot in each Personal Computer to adapt the node to the switch network. The result is that the Personal Computers are fully interconnected and capable of sending data, communications, and/or messages between any two Personal Computers, which become nodes of the parallel system.

Abstract: A media streamer (10) includes at least one storage node (16, 17) for storing a digital representation of a video presentation. The video presentation requires a time T to present in its entirety, and is stored as a plurality of N data blocks, each data block storing data corresponding approximately to a T/N period of the video presentation. The media streamer further includes a plurality of communication nodes (14) each having at least one input port and at least one output port; a circuit switch (18) connected between the at least one storage node and input ports of the plurality of communication nodes, the circuit switch selectively coupling one or more of the input ports to the at least one storage node to enable the digital representation stored thereat to appear at one or more of the output ports; and at least one control node (18) coupled at least to the plurality of communication nodes and to the at least one storage node for enabling any one of the N blocks to appear at any output port of any of the plurality of communication nodes.

Abstract: MULTI-MEDIA ANALOG/DIGITAL/OPTICAL SWITCHING APPARATUS Disclosed is multi-media switching apparatus for performing digital, analog, and/or optical communications amongst multiple nodes over switching networks. The key aspect of the present invention is the full parallel aspect of the switching apparatus which supports n simultaneously, low-latency connections, where n is the number of functional elements interconnected by the switching network. Any of the n simultaneous transmissions can be digital, analog, or optical in any proportion. In addition, the present invention can also serve as a high-speed distributed controller for the purpose of of selecting analog or optical switches for information transfer between elements of the system.

Abstract: Disclosed is a modularly expandable switch-based planar apparatus for inserting multiple bus-based processor cards and/or expansion cards and interconnecting the said cards via a multi-stage switch network which resides on the invention planar. The switching network is built into the planar. The cards require no modification or change of any kind, since the connection to the planar is made as if the planar contained the standard MicroChannel interconnection. However, the disclosed planar implements bus converter units to convert the standard bus interface provided by the cards to the switch network interface, so that functions provided by the cards can communicate in parallel over the switch network.

Abstract: A generic network device includes a serial line switching apparatus for performing either parallel or serial communications amongst multiple nodes over switching networks. One aspect shows adaptation of standard and proprietary serial interfaces using either optical or electrical transmission media to interface to the parallel switch. Converted serial data is routed to the selected destination through the parallel switch network, where it is received and converted back into a serial optical or electrical interface/protocol. A parallel electrical switch can efficiently handle optical or electrical serial data and utilize information via wireless gateways to provide the features required for parallel processing and "farm" approaches, such as low latency, high bandwidth, scalability, fault tolerance, and high reliability. In addition, flexibility is provided which permitting the switching adapter to be personalized to support any one of a number of standard and proprietary serial protocols. A personalization PROM specifies the particular serial protocol that each individual adapter is to support. The parallel switching network becomes a flexible media that interconnects and allows different serial protocols to communicate with each other; i.e., any number of different serial protocols can interface with the same parallel switch network. However, a node is not restricted to communicating only with other nodes using the same protocol; it can communicate with any of the other nodes regardless of the serial protocol they use. The switch enables generic networks with heterogeneous and/or homologous nodes as a computer system.
