Abstract: The improved disk drive system has an improved actuator arm assembly where the arms are independently and individually insertable and removable from the actuator member. Furthermore, each arm is individually self-locked into the actuator member without the need for external retaining means such as screws, springs, and rings. Since the arms are individually insertable/removable, the arms can be made very thin thereby allowing easy attachment of the head suspension assembly to the arm without the need for swaging, bonding, welding or screw-in. Since the arms can be made very thin, that provides substantial reduction in disk to disk spacing and therefore, substantial reduction in the overall height of a disk drive system.

Abstract: A direct access storage device (DASD) includes a plurality of motion limiters and/or a continuous motion limiter projecting from at least one of the base and cover, each motion limiter having faces disposed in close proximity to and confronting opposite surfaces of a data storage disk adjacent a peripheral portion of the disk that does not contain data. Preferably, the motion limiters are disposed at several points about the periphery of the disk, and may be incorporated in a load/unload ramp and/or side rails of the DASD. The faces of the motion limiters are disposed relative to the disk so that when the DASD is subjected to an acceleration, the disk contacts at least one of the faces only at the peripheral portion of the disk, outside the data zone. Accordingly, the motion limiters prevent data zone and spindle bearing damage when the DASD is dropped.

Preferably, the motion limiters (48) are disposed at several points about the periphery of the disk, and may be incorporated in a load/unload ramp and/or side rails of the direct access storage device. The faces (55, 57) of the motion limiters (48) are disposed relative to the disk so that when the direct access storage device (10) is subjected to acceleration, the disk contacts at least one of the faces (55, 57) only at the peripheral portion (42) of the disk, outside the data zone (40). Accordingly, the motion limiters (48) prevent data zone (40) and spindle bearing (34) damage when the direct access storage device (10) is dropped.

Abstract: The system of a disk with a spindle motor (16) is provided with an improved tripping mechanism of an arm assembly (34, 36) where the arms (34) are independently and individually retractable and extendable from a tipping member (36). In addition thereto each arm is individually self-locking in the tripping member (36) without necessity of external fasteners, such as bolts, springs and rings. Due to the fact that the arms (34) are individually retracted/extended they can be manufactured very thin enabling thus easy attachment of a suspension assembly of heads (33) to the arm (34) without necessity to die forging, adhesive bonding, welding or screwing together. Because the arms can be very thin, a substantial reduction of mutual distance of disks (12)from each other and thus substantial reduction of the total height of the disk driving system can be achieved.
