Abstract: PURPOSE: To obtain a disk drive enclosure structure where a special form whose draft is zero is used in a die casting process. CONSTITUTION: A data storage disk drive 10 includes a spindle, which supports plural disks on the surface of a magnetic disk which are rotated around a common shaft and form a spindle assembly 18, and a rotary actuator which supports plural magnetic transducers on the surface of each disk. The disk drive includes a die cast disk drive enclosure structure 12 including the surface to which a spindle motor shaft and an actuator bearing shaft are set and where a predeterminate draft is zero. The enclosure structure includes a base cast member 14, which holds an electric connector arranged on the outside, and a cover cast member 16. The disk drive includes an electric passage from a flexible circuit to a comb-shaped part of the actuator. The disk drive includes a tubular chemical air filter arranged in a groove for diffusion integrated with the cover as one body.

Preferably, the motion limiters are disposed at several points about the periphery of the disk, and may be incorporated in a load/unload ramp and/or side rails of the DASD. The faces of the motion limiters are disposed relative to the disk so that when the DASD is subjected to an acceleration, the disk contacts at least one of the faces only at the peripheral portion of the disk, outside the data zone. Accordingly, the motion limiters prevent data zone and spindle bearing damage when the DASD is dropped.

Abstract: A direct access storage device (10) includes a plurality of motion limiters (48) and/or a continuous motion limiter (48) projecting from at least one of the base (12) and cover (58), each motion limiter (48) having faces (55, 57) disposed in close proximity to and confronting opposite surfaces (38, 39) of a data storage disk (14) adjacent a peripheral portion (42) of the disk that does not contain data. Preferably, the motion limiters (48) are disposed at several points about the periphery of the disk, and may be incorporated in a load/unload ramp and/or side rails of the direct access storage device. The faces (55, 57) of the motion limiters (48) are disposed relative to the disk so that when the direct access storage device (10) is subjected to acceleration, the disk contacts at least one of the faces (55, 57) only at the peripheral portion (42) of the disk, outside the data zone (40). Accordingly, the motion limiters (48) prevent data zone (40) and spindle bearing (34) damage when the direct access storage device (10) is dropped.

Abstract: A data storage disk drive is provided with a spindle 42 which supports a plurality of disks 110 for rotation about a common axis, and a rotary actuator 20 which supports magnetic transducers for movement in unison across respective disk surfaces. The disk drive includes a disk drive enclosure having die-cast generated predetermined zero draft registration surfaces 30 - 40 for mounting the spindle motor shaft 42 and the actuator bearing shaft 44 and possibly magnet assemblies 46, 48. The enclosure includes a base casting 14 and a cover casting 16, each casting including structure (figs. 7 - 9) for locating and retaining electrical connectors used for connecting to a planar electronics card (90) located outside the drive enclosure. The disk drive includes an effective and easily manufacturable electrical path from a flex circuit to an actuator comb (figs. 11 - 13). The disk drive also includes a tubular, at least partly electrostatic, chemical breather filter (56) arranged with integral housing and diffusion channels (58) formed in the cover casting (figs. 14 - 24).
