Abstract: A direct access storage device (10) includes a plurality of motion limiters (48) and/or a continuous motion limiter (48) projecting from at least one of the base (12) and cover (58), each motion limiter (48) having faces (55, 57) disposed in close proximity to and confronting opposite surfaces (38, 39) of a data storage disk (14) adjacent a peripheral portion (42) of the disk that does not contain data. Preferably, the motion limiters (48) are disposed at several points about the periphery of the disk, and may be incorporated in a load/unload ramp and/or side rails of the direct access storage device. The faces (55, 57) of the motion limiters (48) are disposed relative to the disk so that when the direct access storage device (10) is subjected to acceleration, the disk contacts at least one of the faces (55, 57) only at the peripheral portion (42) of the disk, outside the data zone (40). Accordingly, the motion limiters (48) prevent data zone (40) and spindle bearing (34) damage when the direct access storage device (10) is dropped.

The ring is dimensioned to permit only a small amount of movement of the rotor relative to the shaft. The permitted movement is less than the minimum movement which would cause damage to the elements of the ball bearing.

Abstract: A bearing design for a rotatable assembly includes two freely rotating balls mounted on the axis of rotation of the assembly and axially separated, one near each axial end of the assembly. Each ball is confined by a moving concave bearing surface of the rotatable assembly and a corresponding fixed concave bearing surface of a mounting attached to a frame, housing, or similar non-rotating structure. One of the fixed mountings is preferably attached to a compressible spring to provide a controlled axial pre-load to the assembly. The balls are substantially enclosed and lubricant provided in the enclosed cavity. In the preferred embodiment, the rotatable assembly is a rotary actuator assembly of a disk drive. Compared to conventional ball bearing designs, the present design reduces the number of parts and volume of space occupied by the bearings, reduces hysteresis, and improves shock resistance.

Abstract: A disk drive contains an integrally-formed one-piece hub, clamp and rotor housing, which is preferably injection-molded plastic. In the preferred embodiment, the hub includes a hollow cylindrical portion for surrounding a set of bearings mounted on a central shaft, and a flange portion extending from the middle of the cylinder and supporting a single disk. Compliant clamping fingers on the upper surface of the flange engage the disk through its central hole. The fingers are inclined slightly outward, and include a pawl at the end of each finger. During assembly, the disk is forced over the pawls of the fingers until they engage the disk. The fingers, being slightly elastic, will deform to permit the disk to slide over the pawls, and then return to lock the disk in place. The fingers automatically center the disk about the hub axis, without the need for centering tools. The hub also serves as a housing for the rotor of a spindle motor which rotates the disk. A back iron ring and permanent magnets are attached to the underside of the flange at its outer edge to form the rotor. An electromagnetic stator assembly surrounds the disk axis in the annular space defined by the flange, the permanent magnets and back iron at the outer edge, and the cylindrical portion of the hub at the inner edge.

Abstract: A dual latch apparatus disposed in a direct access storage device for restraining a rotatably mounted actuator in a parked orientation in the presence of relatively low, moderate, and high levels of externally induced actuator acceleration is disclosed. An inertial latch assembly in preferably employed to prevent unrestrained actuator rotation from the parked orientation that would otherwise result from elevated levels of externally induced actuator acceleration. A separate magnetic latch assembly, or, alternatively, an electromagnetic latch assembly, is employed in tandem with the inertial latch assembly to prevent unrestrained actuator rotation and movement from the parked orientation in the presence of relatively low and moderate levels of externally induced actuator acceleration. The novel dual actuator latch apparatus is amenable for installation in standard form factor DASDs, and is particularly well-suited for incorporation in small and very small form factor DASDs.

Abstract: A separate elastic shroud (16) to surround a disk pack (11) is inserted into a disk drive housing after the disk pack and the actuator of the disk drive have been merged. This improvement simplifies manufacturing and assembly. The shroud may contain a filter (37) which permits the passage of air from within the shrouded enclosure to outside the shrouded enclosure, and the filter is disposed in a region wherein a positive pressure exists within the disk pack enclosure relative to the pressure immediately outside the shroud. The shroud further may be provided with flanges or ribs (30) which will engage the periphery of deflected disks of the disk pack to eliminate disk-to-disk contact, thereby reducing damage to the disk drive mechanisms and the disks proper. The shroud, filter design and placement, as well as the inlet and outlet shapes of the shroud each contribute therefore to reduce energy consumption and temperature rises within the disk drive.
