    Abstract: A method and system for achieving highly available, fault-tolerant execution of components in a distributed computing system, without requiring the writer of these components to explicitly write code (such as entity beans or database transactions) to make component state persistent. It is achieved by converting the intrinsically non-deterministic behavior of the distributed system to a deterministic behavior, thus enabling state recovery to be achieved by advantageously efficient checkpoint-replay techniques. The method comprises: adapting the execution environment for enabling message communication amongst and between the components; automatically associating a deterministic timestamp in conjunction with a message to be communicated from a sender component to a receiver component during program execution, the timestamp representative of estimated time of arrival of the message at a receiver component. At a component, tracking state of that component during program execution, and periodically checkpointing the state in a local storage device. Upon failure of a component, the component state is restored by recovering a recent stored checkpoint and re-executing the events occurring since the last checkpoint. The system is deterministic by repeating the execution of the receiving component by processing the messages in the same order as their associated timestamp.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system and method for recognizing and identifying a subject under a series of changes controlled by the subject to biometrics and a record medium. SOLUTION: This invention defines new biometrics called as resultant biometrics. The resultant biometrics are a combination of the conventional biometrics and a change specifically controlled. In other words, signals of the resultant biometrics are arranged as a sequence of a short-interval biometrics signal and altered according to a specified pattern. A finger print or a palm print thus obtained is turned to a continuous pressing image, for example, by letting a subject apply a torque or a rotation or both thereof for an image gaining time length (a controlled change). A physical method of letting the subject deform the image makes an action apart of the resultant biometrics and the finger print of the palm print a physiological part of the resultant biometrics.

    Abstract: This invention defines novel biometrics, called resultant biometrics. These resultant biometrics are a combination of traditional biometrics and some controlled change to the traditional biometric. That is, they are sequences of biometric signals over a short interval of time where the signals are modified according to some pattern. Resultant finger- or palm prints, for example, are consecutive print images where the subject exerts force, torque and/or rolling (controll ed change) over an image acquisition interval of time. The physical way the subject distorts the imag es is the behavioral part of the resultant biometrics, the finger or palm print is the physiological part of the resultant biometric. An undistorted print image in combination with an expression of t he distortion trajectory which can be computed from the sequence of distorted print images, forms a more compact representation of the resultant fingerprint. A template representing the resultant print biometrics is derived from the traditional template representing the finger- or palm print plus a template representing the trajectory. Other traditional biometrics also lend themselv es to temporal modification and are described in the invention.
