Abstract: Typewriter carbon ribbon is automatically attached to a takeup reel by the combined provision of: (1) a flexible camming plate that creates significant friction interaction between the reel and the ribbon and is constructed to be effective even when substantial amounts of ribbon have been previously wound on the reel; (2) an electrically neutral flange to eliminate the adverse effects of static electricity on automatic attachment; (3) a reel enclosure for maintaining loose ribbon in the proximity of the reel; (4) several selective control modes of operation to assist the operator; and (5) several other features of construction relating principally to effective handling of a loose flimsy ribbon end.

Abstract: 1,221,538. Extruding; working at specified temperatures; making typewriter parts. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. 24 May, 1968 [14 July, 1967], No. 24853/68. Headings B3A, B3P and B3V. [Also in Division C7] A method of forming a metal article particularly a typewriter part comprises pressing metal from a heated stock 20 through a passageway 15 and into a heated forming cavity 11, the pressure causing the metal to be passed into the cavity as a ribbon which is then deformed by bending and pressed into a solid body having a shape conforming to that of the internal surface of the cavity, the metal being maintained wholly in a solid crystalline phase throughout the process. The stock metal and forming cavity are preferably heated such that the metal used attains a temperature at which it becomes superplastic. Metal pellets may also be used in the process. Preferred metals are by weight 78% zinc and 22% aluminium; 67% aluminium and 33% copper; 88% aluminium and 12% silicon; or 62% copper and 38% zinc; 59% copper and 41% zinc or 52% copper and 48% zinc. Preferred forming temperatures for the Zn: Al alloy are 500‹ to 532‹ F. and for the Al : Si alloy 900‹ to 1040‹ F.

Abstract: 1,188,047. Stamping; working at specified temperatures. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. 29 Nov., 1968 [12 Dec., 1967], No. 56890/68. Headings B3Q and B3V. A method of forming an assembly 10, 11, 12, Fig. 6, held together by a support 13 1 comprises arranging metal or plastics parts 10, 11, 12 with their bases 30, Fig. 1, exposed, locating over the bases 30 a sheet 13 of metal conditioned to exhibit superplasticity, and forming the support 13 1 by deforming the sheet 13 to embrace the bases 30, which may have undercut recesses. An Al-Zn sheet 13 may be used, conditioned as described in Specification 1,120,007 or in 1,125,072. Apparatus for performing the method includes a die 14 for locating the parts 10, 11, 12 and having embossing protuberances 42, 43, ejectors 33 and air vents (35), Fig. 2 (not shown). After positioning the parts on resilient supports 16 they are located by pins 20 and the supports 16 locked by eccentrics 23. Compressed-air is introduced beneath the sheet, through a port 32, to press the sheet against a hold-down 50 which includes resistance heaters 54 for raising the temperature of the sheet to 520- 532‹ F. At this temperature the sheet is deformed into the die by compressed-air introduced through a passage 56, a pressure difference of 100 Lb./inch for 30 seconds being used. The sheet is then made rigid by cooling with vapour or, for a Zn-Al eutectoid, by heating between 532-600‹ F.
