Ink-ribbon mounting mechanism for ink ribbons mounted on spools or enclosed in cartridges 10 comprises a fixed plate 21 having upstanding flanges 22 and a pivotal plate 23 resiliently biased by a spring 25 to hold between them the ink ribbon cartridge 10 provided with a radially extending slot 19 to expose the ink ribbon 11, which is contacted by a brake 31 pivotally mounted by means of pins 32 on the plate 23 and resiliently biased against the ribbon 11 by a toggle spring 33. Mounting mechanism is provided with a conductor wire 29 to remove static charges from the plates imparted thereto by the plastics cartridge formed by thermosealing of a backplate 15 and a moulded plate 16 which defines an annular space within which the ink ribbon 11 is mounted. In the case of an ink ribbon mounted on a spool, the latter is mounted for rotation on a hub 41 which is pivoted through an opening 44 into its operative position in which it is retained by a toggle spring 43.
