Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the cost of an inexpensive or expensive system by using the same input/output data compression module. SOLUTION: A master data compression module 10 has non-compression data input/output terminals, data compressor/expander, a data flow manager and compressed data input/output terminals. Furthermore, the system has a dual data compression module 11 of the same configuration as that of the module 10. Tandem control of this system instructs the master data flow manager to control compressed data input/output and instructs a dual data flow manager to give up the control. Dual port active/slave control in response to reception of an input at either of non-compression data input/output terminals sets non- compensation data input/output terminals of a module not receiving the input in an idle state and instructs a module receiving an input on input/output of non-compression data. Then a module in a slave state expands input data going to be compressed and a data comparator detects propriety of master data compression.

Abstract: A circuit for simultaneously detecting both MO and ROM signals reflected from an optical disk so that both signals are present and useable without switching from one to the other. The circuit eliminates switching time and switching transients. Two photodetectors are arranged to sense P and S components of polarized light in order to stimulate a differential amplifier and produce an output representative of MO recorded data. A second amplifier is connected to at least one of the photodetectors to produce an output representative of ROM recorded data and also representative of defects in the MO portion of the optical disk.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for storing data allowing a data-sent entity to erase its data by physically writing the data to a tape before issuing a command completion response. SOLUTION: A recording system of a magnetic tape drive is operated to cause one separate set of write heads to write the data discontinuously to the magnetic tape as received, and to save the data, and during the same operation, to cause another separate set of write heads to rewrite the data to the magnetic tape in a continuous arrangement. The writing may be made in parallel and simultaneous. Thus, during the same operation, and at the same time, the separate sets of the plurality of write heads, temporarily write the received data to the magnetic tape so that a sender can erase its copy, and rewrite the saved data to the magnetic tape in a permanent arrangement, without waiting to complete first writing the received data, to complete subsequently rewriting the data and repeating a series of this flow.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To decide an FIFO compression efficiency based on a bit length of a token of each variable size by selecting a compression mode of input data only when a compression efficiency of a current mode indicates that the efficiency is higher than a compression efficiency in other modes. SOLUTION: Data compressors 40, 41 give information relating to a length of a code word to a comparison logic 59 via signal lines 56, 57 respectively for FIFO comparison of compression efficiencies in each mode. No inter-mode changeover takes place till it is considered that saving relating to a length of data is in matching with a threshold value in direct relation to sacrifice of swapping. Thus, so long as a compression efficiency in the current mode is higher than a compression efficiency in other modes based on threshold value comparison, a mode to compress input data is selected. Furthermore, the threshold value is in direct relation to number of bits of a multi-bit mode changeover characters.

Abstract: Data-storing disks, preferably each disk having a single spiral track, have addressable tracks that are independent of the length of disk or spiral track revolutions. Each revolution may contain a non-integral number of addressable tracks and sectors. An optical disk is used to describe the invention. The circumferential location of the tracks and sectors precess circumferentially. A plurality of radially disposed revolution bands each contain a fixed number of the revolutions an increasing number of the addressable tracks in the radially outer more ones of the bands. It is preferred that the number of bands be 2n, where n is an integer. Each band is divided into a plurality of revolution groups, each group having a fixed number of revolutions. Each group in a band has a like number of the addressable tracks. A so-called anchor sector has one end anchored to a reference circumferential position on the disk. Each revolution group begins with an anchor sector, all other sectors in the group are positioned circumferentially with respect to the anchor sector. Addressable track seeking, alternate embodiments and fabrication of a disk are described.

Abstract: When optical disk recorder having readback circuits is used with pulse width modulated (PWM) signals a phase error of a clocking system with respect to the phase of a data signal is used to generate an amplitude detection threshold offset for servoing of the amplitude detection threshold by the phase error signals tending to increase the probability of faithful detection of data carried by the PWM or other signals.

Abstract: TU9-90-023 OPTICAL DISK PLAYERS HAVING READBACK CIRCUITS WITH NOISE REJECTION AND READ SIGNAL RETIMING In an optical disk player, such as for a magnetooptic player, wherein the data recorded on the optical medium are at recording at such high densities then intersymbol interference causes the peaks of the readback signals to become closer together resulting in phase errors. A transition selecting means is operative to select a transition indicated by the readback signal or a substitute transition indicated by a timed delay means generates a signal based upon the immediately preceding transition received from optical medium. Various embodiments of the invention are illustrated.
