Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a photo-cathode electron source for a flat panel display device that can provide emission uniformity by sticking a photo-electron emission material as a uniform layer. SOLUTION: A photo-cathode electron source 100 suitable to use in a flat panel display device has an extraction grating means 104 to be kept at a positive potential using a photo-cathode surface as a reference during its use. The extraction grating means can be used as a carrier of a non-firing photo-electron emission material to form the emission surface of the photo-cathode. This material is stuck on a surface 103 of a photo-cathode means 102 by its evaporation from the extraction grating 104.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display electron supply source having self-stability. SOLUTION: The position of a virtual remote cathode is related to a spatial charge cloud conserved by the shape of a fixed insulating plate 902. This plate 902 can be shaped to accurate size, and thereby the distance from a cathode 510 to a control grid 502 can be accurately controlled to exert no influence of the mechanical, electrical and physical change of a structure. The fixed insulating plate 902 is arranged on the face opposite from the cathode 510 of the control grid 502.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide such an electron source that an extracted current density coincides with an emission characteristic of a cathode and there is no interaction between a pixel/array structural part and an extracting grid. SOLUTION: A frame 202 is provided around an extracting grid 200. The extracting grid 200 comprises plural apertures 204, 207. The apertures 204 are etched and have a square shape. The smaller number of apertures 207 have a U-shape. Portions which are not removed from the extracting grid 200 form flap 206 areas. The flaps are mechanically bent at a right angle, to form the extracting grid 200 into a three-dimensional structure from a two-dimensional structure. The flaps 200 are used for precisely separating the extracting grid 200 from a cathode substrate 102. Thereby, the distance between the electron source and the extracting grid 200 can be kept constant.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a metal/ferrite laminated magnet having openings which are accurately aligned with a phosphor under all operating conditions by substantially aligning the openings of a first and second ferrite sheet with those of a second metallic plate. SOLUTION: A metallic plate 105 is cut to measure and openings 125 are formed through the plate 105 by etching. Then a first green ferrite sheet 115 is fitted to one surface of the etched metallic plate 105 and openings 125 are formed through the sheet 115 by punching by using the etched holes of the metallic plate 105 as guides. Openings 125 are also formed through a second metallic plate 110 and a second green ferrite sheet 120 in the same ways. Then a sandwich-like magnet 100 is formed by bringing the surfaces of the first and second green ferrite sheets 115 and 120 into contact with each other, coupling the sheets 115 and 120 with each other so that the opening of the sheets 115 and 120 may be aligned with each other, and sintering the laminated body. A vertically arranged magnetic field is given to the magnet 100.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To correct rotational positional dislocation between an image screen and a magnet by arranging a grid electrode to control a flow of electrons to respective channels from a cathode, a deflecting means to successively address electron beams to groups of corresponding respective picture elements and a rotary positioning means to position the electron beams on the corresponding picture elements of a phosphor covering. SOLUTION: Electrons are emitted from a cathode 20, and are attracted toward a control grid 40. The electrons enter address designated picture element wells 70 by passing through the control grid 40. A strong magnetic field exists in the respective picture element wells 70. A pair of anodes 50 existing in an upper part of the picture element wells 70 accelerate the electrons passing through the picture element wells 70, and bring about a selective lateral directional swing of an electron beam 30. Next, the electron beam 30 is accelerated toward the anodes formed on a glass plate 90, and reaches a phosphor 80 existing in a lower part by passing through the anodes, and becomes a high speed electron beam 30 having energy sufficient to send out light output.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display device which serves an excellent control function. SOLUTION: This display device includes a cathode means 20 for radiating electrons, and also includes a permanent magnet 60 having a two-dimensional arrangement of channels extending between opposed poles of the magnet 60. A screen 90 receives an electron beam from each channel. The screen 90 has a phosphor coating 80 facing toward the magnet 60 remote from a cathode, and each section of the phosphor coating 80 includes several sections capable of being illuminated, and at least one section can be illuminated by several electron beams. A grid electrode means 40 is arranged between the cathode means 20 and the magnet 60 to control the flow of electrons from the cathode means 20 to each channel. Each element of the grid electrode means 40 includes several elements corresponding to different phosphor sections capable of being illuminated. A first anode means 50 is arranged between the magnet 60 and the screen 90 to accelerate the electron beam toward the screen 90.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display device including a field emission cathode means to emit electrons. SOLUTION: Plural electron beams are formed by a field emission cathode 20. A screen having a phosphor covering 150 opposing to the cathode 20 receives plural electron beams. The phosphor covering 150 includes plural picture elements corresponding to different electron beams of the above plural electron beams. Grid electron means 71 and 72 are provided between the cathode means and the screen, so as to control the flow of the electron from the cathode means. The field emission cathode 20 includes an extract grid having plural parts allowable to address separately relating to the above plural picture elements respectively. In order to emulate a conventional type CRT, a gamma transmission function is provided between an input data and a beam current. This can be accomplished by using a lookup table.

Abstract: An electron source comprises a cathode means, and an extractor grid used to extract electrons from the cathode. The extractor grid is formed by etching a plurality of apertures in the material. A plurality of spacing members for spacing the extractor grid at a constant, predetermined spacing from the cathode are used. Each of the spacing members is formed by etching around a substantial portion of the periphery of the aperture and folding a remaining portion of the periphery of the aperture at substantially a right angle to the planar material.
