Abstract: 1434470 Electro-physical measurementposition INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 29 July 1974 [17 Aug 1973] 33368/74 Heading G1N The invention relates to the form of electrodes used for sensing the position of electrostatically deflected charged ink-drops in an ink-jet-printer, as described in Specification 1408657, where in Fig. 4 (not shown) thereof a pair of electrodes are mounted above and below the flight path, and connected to a differential amplifying system. In the present Specification several arrangements are illustrated Figs. 2-17b (mostly not shown):- (i) the electrodes may extend along the flight path for six drop spacings and be inclined thereto Fig. 4b (flight towards viewer), (ii) Fig. 6b they may be U-shaped surrounding the flight path, (and may have electrostatic shields Fig. 7 (not shown), (iii) Fig. 10 the spacing may be staggered, (iv) They may be tapered e.g. as in Fig. 13 providing an unsymmetrical pulse, (v) One of the electrodes may be combined with the down-stream electrode (e.g. the sync sensor) to determine the velocity as described in Specification 1408657, Fig. 16 (not shown), (v) Horizontal and vertical sensor electrode pairs may be provided Figs. 17 (not shown).

Abstract: An important factor in quality of printing with an ink jet printing apparatus is the velocity of the ink jet stream. The present case describes a number of servo systems for controlling velocity of the stream. This can be done indirectly by sensing pressure and/or temperature or directly by sensing velocity of the stream and controlling the pump frequency or pump drive currents.

Abstract: 1385137 Printers INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 4 Sept 1973 [13 Oct 1972] 41513/73 Heading G4H In an ink drop printer, one or more of a predefined sequence of ink-drop-deflection signals can be skipped through to speed up printing. After a shift register has been loaded via another shift register with a bit sequence for a given column of a character dot matrix, from a character generator, the bit sequence is shifted out, each "1" bit gating a slow clock train to a counter and permitting a D/A converter fed by the counter to control charging of a respective ink drop which is then deflected by a constant field by an amount dependent on the charge and therefore count. Each "0" bit zeroes the D/A converter output (so that the ink drop is caught in a gutter rather than deflected on to the paper) and gates a fast clock train to the counter so that the count position not required for printing is skipped through fast. To reduce ink spatter &c.' two or more sweeps down each column are made, with adjacent drops being deposited in different sweeps. A staircase generator may replace the counter and D/A converter.
