Abstract: An ink jet printing apparatus is described having facilities for printing information in character locations, (boxes) each character location comprising a plurality of vertical columns of drop locations, and a number of characters comprising a line of information. Structures and circuits are included for insuring correct location of information within the character boxes and also providing for one mode in which characters are printed continuously line-by-line and another mode in which characters are printed incrementally character-by-character. During incremental printing, as well as the first character in a line or group of characters, provision is made for re-bounding the printhead back into the box of the character just printed, that is, prior to the next character box to be printed to insure that when the printhead starts up again for the next character that all drop components for that character, including any located in the immediate vicinity of the character boundary, are properly placed during printing.

Abstract: 1385137 Printers INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 4 Sept 1973 [13 Oct 1972] 41513/73 Heading G4H In an ink drop printer, one or more of a predefined sequence of ink-drop-deflection signals can be skipped through to speed up printing. After a shift register has been loaded via another shift register with a bit sequence for a given column of a character dot matrix, from a character generator, the bit sequence is shifted out, each "1" bit gating a slow clock train to a counter and permitting a D/A converter fed by the counter to control charging of a respective ink drop which is then deflected by a constant field by an amount dependent on the charge and therefore count. Each "0" bit zeroes the D/A converter output (so that the ink drop is caught in a gutter rather than deflected on to the paper) and gates a fast clock train to the counter so that the count position not required for printing is skipped through fast. To reduce ink spatter &c.' two or more sweeps down each column are made, with adjacent drops being deposited in different sweeps. A staircase generator may replace the counter and D/A converter.

Abstract: 1405197 Ink drop printers INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 14 May 1973 [27 June 1972] 22760/73 Heading G4H An ink-drop printer 1-30 comprises means 37-57 for detecting failure in synchronisation between drop charging and drop formation. Test signals 41-43, 81 or 65 (ramp or pulse signals, Fig. 3, not shown) are applied to the charge electrode 18 so as to cause otherwise uncharged drops to be deflected into a gutter 35 or 36; the synchronization may be effected line-by-line (e.g. in the home position for each line), between characters or within the matrix boundaries of individual characters. Each gutter contains a sensor which translates charge into current level; the use of gutter 35 produces current levels smaller than those normally encountered during printing, whereas the levels obtainable from gutter 36 are higher since a greater potential is required to deflect the drops thereto (this can also detect lack of potential 25 on deflecting plate 22). The resulting signal A or B is changed to a voltage level and fed with a reference 55 to a comparator 57, the resulting difference signal being used to adjust the timing of drop separation in a piezo-electric crystal driver 15 relative to the signals applied to charge electrode 18. Another embodiment similar to that of Fig. 1 is described with reference to Fig 2 (not shown). Co-pending Application No. 41107/73 describes a similar system for a plurality of ink streams.

Abstract: An optical position sensing apparatus utilizing a grating having two sets of opaque and transparent lines thereon, one of the sets being off-set from the other is associated with a source-detector assembly, the source and detector assembly including pairs of light sources and detection devices with at least one of the devices of one of the pairs being aligned with one set of light interrupting opaque lines and the other device of the pair being aligned with the other set of light interrupting opaque lines so that the image of the area illuminated by the opposing source is projected back upon the area of the grating in front of its respective detector as by an image reflecting surface, preferably a concave mirror. Inasmuch as the illuminated areas are of the same phase, the projected images will also be of a similar phase. The grating lines in front of the detectors, however, are 90 DEG off-set due to the off-set of the grating lines. This causes the output signal from the detectors to have a phase relation which will permit direction sensing as to the movement of, for example, the carrier in an ink jet printer.
