    Abstract: Excess solder is removed from contact elements to which a semiconductor device or integrated circuit chip is to be bonded on a multiple chip carrying substrate, without damaging chips solder bonded to adjacent contact elements. Typically, a chip not functioning according to test specifications is removed by reflowing its solder bonds in a carefully controlled heat cycle, then lifting it from the contact elements. The present process removes excess solder left behind by the removed chip. A layer of solderable metal is deposited on a member essentially duplicating the heat transfer characteristics of the chip. The excess solder is contacted with the solderable metal layer. The excess solder is heated to reflow temperatures in a heat cycle duplicating that used for reflowing the solder bond. The member simulating the chip is then removed, carrying with it the excess solder and restoring the contact elements to proper condition for receiving a replacement chip, without damage to adjacent chips.

    Abstract: 1,160,048. Read-only stores. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. 28 May, 1968 [14 July, 1967], No. 25424/68. Heading G4A. A data store uses an interference pattern, data being distinguished by bandwidth. An optical read-only store uses a Lippmann photographic plate in the thickness of which spaced reflecting layers have been established by setting up standing waves of light, developing and fixing. An electro-optical digital light deflector is used for selecting a storage position at which a 5-bit word is recorded using wide and narrow ranges of wavelengths (centred on the same wavelength) for bit-values 0 and 1 respectively, the ranges relating to different bit positions being non-overlapping in the frequency spectrum. A shutter, and rotatable disc bearing 5 x 2 bandpass filters, are used in recording. On read-out, a Fabry-Perot multibandpass filter (two spaced partially-reflecting films) passes a range of wavelengths (of light reflected from the photographic plate) at each bit position in the frequency spectrum which includes part of the " 0 " range but essentially none of the "1" range, a prism then frequencyanalysing the light on to a line of five photocells. Alternatively, for read-out, a Michelson interferometer produces interference fringes from essentially only the "1" bits, by suitable choice of the path-difference in the interferometer. The fringes are diffused by a groundglass screen and then frequency-analysed by a lens system on to a line of five photo-cells. Use of holography and Lippmann holography are mentioned as alternatives.

    Abstract: 1,138,128. Read-only stores. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. 4 Sept., 1967 [12 Jan., 1967], No. 40317/67. Heading G4A. Positioning means is controlled by position detecting means responsive to the frequency pattern produced by a Lippmann film registration area in or on the object to be positioned. As described, the object is a Lippmann film optical read-only storage plate, i.e. a transparent photographic plate in which information is stored as light reflecting layers with characteristic spacing by directing light of selected frequencies at areas of the plate e.g. by use of lasers, grating, and electro-optic deflector, to set up standing waves, then removing the plate, developing it, and replacing it. Data is read using selected frequency light again, a grating to separate the frequencies reflected, and photodetectors. To facilitate accurate positioning on replacement, registration information in three areas was recorded along with the data. Registration information is read from two of the areas alternately and compared. The table on which the plate is mounted is rotated in a sense determined by the difference until identical signals are obtained from both areas, then the table is moved rectilinearly in X and Y directions until the signals from the two areas reach standard (equal) values.
