Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase the track density of a data storage medium while using a servo track of a conventional medium in regard to a servo position detector which detects a dividing position that had the offset displacement to the edge of the servo track and follows the dividing position. SOLUTION: The servo tracks 40 and 42 have edges 47 and 48 on both sides opposite to each other of a center recorded servo signal 44, and a prescribed distance is set between both edges 47 and 48. A servo reproduction element includes an active detection area that is not larger than and substantially equal to the said distance set between the edges 47 and 48. An independent position detector detects a rough position of the servo reproduction element and shows one of both edges 47 and 48 or one of dividing positions 55-58 that is aligned with the servo reproduction element. A logic circuit compares two detected servo signals with each other and decides a ratio between both signals. Then an error is decided between the decided ratio of both servo signals and a prescribed ratio.

SOLUTION: An asymmetry cancellation component communicates with an analog-to-digital converter which receives an analog signal representing data read from a storage medium by a read head. The asymmetry cancellation component receives the digital signal from the analog-to-digital converter representing the data read from the storage medium, and computes an error signal indicating an asymmetry in the digital signal. Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a programmable writing system for an optical disc driver which can meet the requirements of generating pulse position modulation(PPM) pulses and generating pulse width modulation(PWM) pulses. SOLUTION: A pattern detector 310 detects input data in response to a PPM/ PWM mode command. The detected data are programmed and supplied to a pulse selection mechanism 316 in order to select one of or both of a pulse output value and a pulse duration time. The pulse selection mechanism makes a pulse generating mechanism 336 operate so as to set the pulse output level or/and the duration time of the pulse of the generated laser pulse signal. In the PWM mode, the pattern detector 310 supplies a toggle signal in accordance with the respective detected signals and the pulse selection mechanism performs the supply of one of or both of a mark pulse output value and a mark pulse duration time and the supply of a space duration value alternately in response to the toggle signal. With this constitution, alternate mark signals and space signals are provided.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the threshold tracking method to be adaptable to easy updating, altering and modifying by attenuating a new envelope follower value by a programable threshold attenuating factor and providing a programable threshold generator for generating a threshold signal. SOLUTION: A discriminated positive peak signal on a line 28 is compared with a positive threshold tracking signal on a line 29 by a comparator 30. A gate signal for gating the discriminating positive peak signal from the line 28 to a register 32 is generated by the comparator 30. A digital amplitude of the last recognized peak is stored by the register 32. The peak is given to an error generating block 36 for the purpose of comparison with a value in a positive envelope follower. A generated error is given to a register 46. This positive or negative error is multiplied by a programable gain coefft. given on a line 50, and is then added to the stored value in the envelope follower, so as to update the envelope follower.

Abstract: A method for monitoring a plurality of servo channels, providing a finite state machine (FSM) comprising a single servo channel mode and a combined servo channel mode, and moving a sequential information storage medium comprising a plurality of servo bands across a read/write head comprising a corresponding plurality of servo sensors. The method further asserts an acquisition flag by a servo channel if that servo channel is tracking a servo pattern, and asserts a bit flag by a servo channel if a new LPOS bit is decoded. If at least one acquisition flag is asserted, the method determines if a bit flag is asserted by a servo channel associated with said asserted acquisition flag, and if an acquisition flag and a bit flag are asserted by a servo channel, the method determines a relative positioning of each servo sensor with respect to an associated servo pattern.

Abstract: A tape drive includes a controller having logic configured to obtain at least two periodic waveform components of a high density (HD) servo signal. The HD signal being read by a servo reader 716 from a HD pattern written on a servo band of a magnetic tape medium. The logic is also configured to filter the HD servo signal using a number of digital filters 702, 704 and 706 that are configurable to detect waveform components simultaneously read from the magnetic tape medium. Each digital filter being configured to match waveform component parameters and tape velocity. The logic computes a position error signal 724 (PES) based on the filtered HD servo signal. The HD servo pattern may have three periodic waveforms of a low f1, mid f2 and high frequency f3. Each digital filter may be configured to estimate an energy of a periodic waveform component by the Goertzel algorithm.

The logic is also configured to perform post-decoding error diagnostics on a first portion of the decoded data in response to not obtaining a valid product codeword in the first portion after the iterative decoding of the encoded data. Other systems, methods, and computer program products for producing post-decoding error signatures are also presented.
