Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fully synchronous servo channel for a data tape drive. SOLUTION: The fully synchronous servo channel for a data tape drive includes the initial acquisition of synchronous servo channel parameters, generation of a timing basis for signal interpolation, generation of a tape velocity estimate and a y-position estimate, and optimum detection of longitudinal position (LPOS) symbols. Abstract:
A method for monitoring a plurality of servo channels, providing a finite state machine (FSM) comprising a single servo channel mode and a combined servo channel mode, and moving a sequential information storage medium comprising a plurality of servo bands across a read/write head comprising a corresponding plurality of servo sensors. The method further asserts an acquisition flag by a servo channel if that servo channel is tracking a servo pattern, and asserts a bit flag by a servo channel if a new LPOS bit is decoded. If at least one acquisition flag is asserted, the method determines if a bit flag is asserted by a servo channel associated with said asserted acquisition flag, and if an acquisition flag and a bit flag are asserted by a servo channel, the method determines a relative positioning of each servo sensor with respect to an associated servo pattern.

The storage capacitor manager includes a monitoring unit and capacity managing unit. The storage tier relocation manager includes a target storage tier, the data segment relocated to the target storage tier, and a protection measure.
Abstract:
A tape drive includes a controller having logic configured to obtain at least two periodic waveform components of a high density (HD) servo signal. The HD signal being read by a servo reader 716 from a HD pattern written on a servo band of a magnetic tape medium. The logic is also configured to filter the HD servo signal using a number of digital filters 702, 704 and 706 that are configurable to detect waveform components simultaneously read from the magnetic tape medium. Each digital filter being configured to match waveform component parameters and tape velocity. The logic computes a position error signal 724 (PES) based on the filtered HD servo signal. The HD servo pattern may have three periodic waveforms of a low f1, mid f2 and high frequency f3. Each digital filter may be configured to estimate an energy of a periodic waveform component by the Goertzel algorithm.

Abstract:
Various embodiments for addressing time-varying periodic disturbances in a servo control system are provided. Each of a plurality of coefficients is updated based on an estimation of at least one disturbance frequency. The updated plurality of coefficients is provided to at least one peak filter modifying an input signal of the servo control system. The peak filter is operable in view of the updated plurality of coefficients to cancel at least one of the time-varying periodic disturbances.
Abstract:
Method for operating a storage device with a tape and a head wherein the head comprises a first and a second read element. Each read element is operable to detect servo-pattern of a particular servo band. The first and the second read element are arranged such that the tape at first passes one of both read elements and subsequently passes the other of both read elements when the tape moves in a predetermined longitudinal direction. A tape transport direction of the tape along the longitudinal direction is determined. The first read element is selected dependent on the determined tape transport direction, when the determined tape transport direction represents a direction where the tape at first passes the first read element and subsequently the second read element. Otherwise the second read element is selected. A position error signal is determined dependent on the selected read element.
