    Abstract: Provided are computer program product, system, and method for determining whether a short or long message format is used to communicate zone information in a network. One large zone is implemented for end devices coupled to ports of data forwarders. A first formatted zoning distribution message is generated for the data forwarders identifying the data forwarder and ports on the data forwarders in the one large zone in response to determining that the data forwarder supports the short message format. A second formatted zoning distribution message is generated identifying the data forwarder, the ports on the data forwarders, and additional fields of information on the ports not included in the first formatted zoning distribution message in response to determining that the data forwarder does not support the short message format; and sending the generated first formatted or second formatted zoning distribution message to the data forwarder.

    Abstract: Provided are a computer program product, system, and method for resource allocation in accordance with one embodiment of the present description, in which a resource allocation such as a buffer credit allocation for a port in a storage area network is initialized as a function of a measurement of a length of a communication link for the port of the storage area network. In one embodiment, the length measurement is a function of a minimum command response time of a command issued over the communication link.     Abstract: Techniques are provided for detecting failure of switching elements of a distributed switch configured to forward Fiber Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) frames. Periodic discovery advertisement messages, which include a fabric name fieldm, are transmitted between a controlling Fiber Channel Forwarder (cFCF) and a FCoE data forwarder (FDF). The cFCF determines a FDF has failed out of the switch fabric based on a reserved value in the fabric name field of a received discovery advertisement message, such as a zero or null value, and de-instantiates virtual links with that FDF.
