Abstract: 1,155,546. Electro-photographic process. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. May 1, 1967 [May 5, 1966], No. 19931/67. Heading G2H. [Also in Division H1] A negative transparency or translucency is made by forming an electrostatic charge image on a transparent or translucent photo-sensitive material which has a photo-conductive insulating layer and which is also capable of being made coloured or more opaque by treatment with an agent or radiation, developing the electrostatic charge image with a transparent or translucent barrier material and subjecting the developed photo-sensitive material to treatment with the said agent or radiation so that the areas not protected by the barrier material are made coloured or more opaque. The photo-sensitive materials specified contain a layer having an organic photoconductor and comprise (i) those containing as a separate layer or dispersed in the photo-conductive layer (a) a diazo compound and an azo coupler or a diazo compound alone which become coloured on treatment respectively with ammonia gas or an alkaline solution containing an azo coupler, the barrier material used being an alkali-absorbing material, or (b) a light-sensitive composition, such as an aryl amine-halohydro-carbon composition or a triarylmethane-dye cyanide, which becomes coloured on exposure to ultraviolet radiation, or a diazo compound which gives a vesicular image on exposure to ultraviolet followed by a heat treatment, the barrier material used being an ultraviolet absorbing material; and (ii) those in which the photoconductor or the binder therefor is a polymer containing dye-absorbing groups which can be dyed on treatment with a dye solution, the barrier material used being a non-dye-absorbing material. Lists of suitable diazo compounds, azo couplers, light-sensitive compositions and dye solutions are given. Polymer dye-absorbing binders specified are polyvinyl formal and polyvinyl butyral. The photo-conductive layer may have a NESA glass support or a polyethylene terephthalate support coated with a transparent aluminium or copper layer. Barrier materials used to develop the electrostatic charge image comprise, as alkali-absorbing materials, stearic acid, phenylacetic acid, malonic acid, glycolic acid and saturated fatty acids of m.p. above 43‹ C.; as ultraviolet-absorbing materials, e.g. 2:2'-dihydroxy-4:4'-dimethoxy benzophenone, phenyl salicylate and various hydroxybenzophenones, resorcinols, salicylates and nitro aromatic compounds; and as non-dye-absorbing materials, polystyrene, polyethylene and polypropylene. The barrier material may be ground and dispersed with glass beads or ferromagnetic particles, or dispersed in a dielectric liquid or may be dissolved and the solution dispersed in a dielectric liquid. The photo-conductor layers described in the examples are polyvinyl carbozole containing 3:5-dinitrobenzoic acid with or without Malachite Green oxalate, and polyvinyl formal containing 1:3:5-triphenylpyrazoline and 3:5 dinitrobenzoic acid.

Abstract: 1,092,618. Photoconductive composition. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION July 21, 1966 [July 26, 1965], No 32707/66 Heading H1K [Also in Division G2] A photoconductive composition comprises an organic photoconductor a dyestuff sensitizer and an activator selected from the group consisting of carboxylic acids, and their anhydrides, nitrophenols and nitro anilines. In the specific embodiments, the photoconductors are polyvinyl carbazole; 1 - phenyl - 3 - (41 - dimethyl amino styryl) - 5 - (4 11 - dimethylaminophenyl) pyrazoline; 1,3 - diphenyl - 5(41- dimethylaminophenyl) pyrazoline; 1,3,5 - triphenyl pyrazoline; 1,3,4,5 - tetraphenylimidazole - 2 - thione and 1 - formyl (2,5 - bisp - dimethyl aminophenyl) 1,3,4 - triazole; the dyestuffs Malachite Green, Victoria Blue B, and Ethyl Violet and the activators 3,5-dinitrobenzoic acid; tetrachlorophthalic anhydride; 6,61 - tetranitrodiphenic acid; 2,2 1 ,4,4 1 ,6,6 1 - hexanitrodiphenylamine and picric acid. Resin binders such as PVA and polystyrene are exemplified whilst many others are listed. Lists of suitable polymeric and monomeric photoconductors, sensitizing dyes and activators are given. The composition may be coated on to a support of Cu, Al, Zn, Sn, Pb, Fe, paper, Cu, or Al-coated polyethylene terephthalate, or Nesa-glass. The compositions disclosed exhibit persistent polarization when exposed image-wise and are then charged electrostatically. The persistent conductivity pattern is erased by heating to 100-150‹ C. for 5 seconds.

Abstract: 1,191,157. Electro-photographic copying processes. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. July 17, 1967 [July 18, 1966], No.32708/67 Heading G2H. An electro-photographic copy process in which a latent electrostatic image is formed on a copy member from a conductivity image in a photoconductive member exhibiting photo-conductivity by applying a constant D.C. voltage across a small air gap between the photo-conductive member and copy member, includes a recovery step of charging the photo-conductive member after each image formation. The photo-conductive member is charged with the same polarity as the constant D. C. voltage and of such magnitude that the resulting potential at the surface of the photo-conductive member bounding the air gap is greater than V-V 1 c where V ic is the maximum potential which if applied in place of V does not cause image formation on a further copy member. In one example (Example 1) a photo-conductive film was exposed to a 40 watt incandescent lamp at 12 inches for two seconds and then placed alongside a copy member of dielectric paper and fed through a charging station with a positive polarity of 600 volts applied to the back of the photo-conductive film. Positive charge areas were formed on the copy member corresponding to exposed areas of the film and made visible by application of negative lower particles. The film was then positively charged with a corona discharge at 7000 volts, exposed to a second image and the charge formation and development steps on the dielectric were repeated. The image formed by the first exposure was not visible on the dielectric paper.

Abstract: 1,031,824. Photographic vesicular materials. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Dec. 6, 1962 [Feb. 23, 1962], No. 46151/62. Addition to 1,031,823. Heading G2C. Vesicular images are produced by imagewise exposing a film containing two vesicular materials in a polymeric binder so that one of the materials produces a gas, relaxing the material to form invisible bubbles (e.g. a maximum diameter of 0. 5 microns) and then uniformly exposing the film so that the second material produces a gas and then relaxing the film to produce a visible bubble image. In the example, a mixture of p-dimethylaminobenzene diazonium chloride (ultra violet sensitive) and 7-dimethylamino-3-oxo-dihydrobenzo-1, 4- thiazine-6-diazonium chloride (visible light sensitive) in a polymeric binder is imagewise exposed to visible light, heated to form a latent bubble image, overall exposed to ultra-violet light and then heated to form a visible bubble image.
