Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cable having excellent water barrier properties and flame retardance. SOLUTION: In a preferred embodiment of the cable, a core tube 54, an outer skin 52 surrounding the core tube 54, and a superabsorbent foam 10 placed between the core and the outer skin 52 and within the core are incorporated in the cable. The superabsorbent foam 10 is composed of a urethane foam or a foam of the same type coated with superabsorbent polymers(SAPs) which exhibit the properties of water barrier and flame retardance. Further, the foam preferably has a moisture content which improves the properties of flame retardance of the foam.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical module, including a stack for optical fiber ribbons in a buffer holder. SOLUTION: This optical module is rectangular. A sheath protects all side faces of a stack 32a. In some optical modules 30a, the stacks 32a can be moved relatively to the sheath, and optical fiber ribbons 34 can be moved relatively to each other. The sheath is sufficiently flexible so that optical fiber ribbons 34 can be slid in the transverse direction relative to each other. Consequently, the stack 32a and the sheath can be changed from non-oblique shapes to oblique shapes in the end face figure of the sheath. The stack 32a assumes a shape twisted in the lengthwise direction, and the sheath is hard enough to hold the stack 32a assuming this shape. The sheath has a thickness with its outside surface demarcating a rise corresponding to the twist of the stack 32a.
