    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a transform-based coding technique capable of reducing the coding loss introduced during repetitive coding/decoding processing. SOLUTION: The chain type N level transform coding provides a transform- based coding method without loss using an original restrained quantization and inverse quantization processes. This greatly reduces the coding loss introduced during chained coding (repetition of coding and decoding) of video/picture signals. The transform is an appropriate inversely-transformable block transform e.g. Hadamard transform 408. The restrained quantization and inverse quantization method 410 is used in a decoder to thereby perform an approximately chained coding without loss. The quantization operation applied to block transform coefficients is a conditioning i.e., the quantization operation result depends on quantization coefficient values inputted to the coder.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for selecting a coding mode for a video sequence by deciding whether inter-frame coding is executed or intra-frame coding is executed on the present part of a video sequence, based on only a sample reproduced before it is associated with the video sequence. SOLUTION: The coding mode selector 112 of an encoder is connected to a present frame memory 118. For selecting a coding mode, only a previously reproduced value (sample) from the present frame memory 118 and a previously reproduced value (sample) from a reference frame memory 122 are received.     Abstract: Methods and apparatus for performing near lossless-concatenated N-level constrained quantization Hadamard transform decoding are provided. Accordingly, the present invention provides a transform-based coding technique, where the coding loss introduced during repeated encoding and decoding is reduced to a substantial ly insignificant level. This is accomplished by employing a constrained quantization and inverse quantization operation in each level of encoding/decoding in the decoder. In this manner, the concatenation error between each level of a decoder is reduced to a substantially minimum level and the quantization error introduced during quantization operations, i.e., originally at the encoder and in each level of the decoder, is substantially reduced. Thus, the decoded bit stream that is output at the N-th level of the decoder is substantially the same as the original bit stream provided to the input of the encoder.

Thus, processing of sample Yj can start as soon as processing o f sample Yj-M is finished. Accordingly, effective pipeline stage delay, Dp, can be reduced by a factor of M (from D max to D max /M) and the number of required engines (or, equivalently, required time) can be reduced by the same factor M.
