Abstract:
A process is described for increasing the adhesion of organic coatings to metal surfaces, particularly aluminum and aluminum alloys. The process involves the utilization of an adhesion promoting composition in treating the metal surface prior to application of the organic coating. The adhesion promoting composition comprises a nitro sulfonic acid. A chromating step is optionally employed.
Abstract:
A conversion coating composition and a method of applying the conversion coating composition to magnesium and magnesium alloy articles prior to painting to prevent corrosion. The conversion coating composition comprises a source of vanadate ions, a material comprising phosphorus, and nitric acid or a source of nitrate ions. In addition, the composition may also contain boric acid or a source of borate ions and a source of fluoride ions or a source of fluoroborate ions.
Abstract:
A composition and process for inhibiting the corrosion of metallic substrates is revealed. The process utilizes an aqueous treatment solution comprising chitosan which has been reacted with an acid selected from the group consisting of phosphonic acids, carboxylic acids and mixtures thereof. The composition and process are particularly useful in providing corrosion protection for aluminum and aluminum alloys.
Abstract:

Abstract:
A composition and process for inhibiting the corrosion of metallic substrates is revealed. The process utilizes an aqueous treatment solution comprising chitosan which has been reacted with an additive selected from the group consisting of phosphorus-containing compounds and sulfur-containing compounds and mixtures thereof. More preferably, the phosphorus-containing compound is a phosphonic acid and the sulfur-containing compound is a mercapto, thio, or thienyl containing compound or a mercapto functional silane. The composition and process are particularly useful in providing corrosion protection for aluminum and aluminum alloys.
Abstract:
A method of forming a conversion layer on a metallic surface and a composition usable in the method are provided. The composition is an aqueous solution comprising a source of tungstate ions and a soluble material comprising zirconium. The method provides a conversion coating on a surface that can then be painted or otherwise treated. The conversion coatings of the present invention are minimally affected by heating and/or baking, unlike chromate conversion coatings of the prior art.
