PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide sol-gel alumina abrasive grains which reduce the surface areas of the grains and allow the production of vitreous bonded products using low temperature vitreous bond materials without the production of black points, spots as a result of the incomplete combustion of organic components used in the production process. SOLUTION: The sol-gel alumina abrasive grains are characterized by coating the alumina abrasive grains with a ceramic oxide and containing alpha alumina crystals having particle diameters of ≤2 μm. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of forming a carrier material composed of alumina hydrate as a base material. SOLUTION: A method of forming the carrier material suited to use in Fischer-Tropsch reactions includes forming a dispersion of first and second hydrated alumina materials in a liquid dispersant, such as an acid solution. The first alumina can be derived from an alkali aluminate, such as is formed in the Bayer reaction. The second hydrated alumina can be derived from high purity aluminum, such as via conversion to an alkoxide. An fixed abrasive article is provided which includes a matrix material and abrasive particles embedded within the matrix material. The abrasive particles have a core-shell structure that includes a polycrystalline alpha alumina core and a shell layer overlying the polycrystalline alpha alumina core. The shell layer includes a material selected from the group consisting of silicon oxide and zirconium oxide. Also the polycrystalline alpha alumina core includes grains and having an average grain size of not greater than about 500 nm.

A boehmite particulate material is disclosed. The material is formed by a process that includes providing a boehmite precursor and boehmite seeds in a suspension, and heat treating the suspension to convert the boehmite precursor into boehmite particulate material. The boehmite particulate material has an aspect ratio of not less than 3:1.

A method for making abrasive grains, the method comprising mixing one or more solids with one or more liquids in a twin screw extruder to form a mixture, transferring the mixture to a high pressure piston extruder; and extruding the mixture from the high pressure piston extruder through a die to form an extrude. The method further includes segmenting the extrudate to form extruded shaped abrasive particles.

Ceramic particulate material includes alumina particles, the particles having a specific surface area (SSA) not less than 15 m2/g and not greater that 75m2/g and a sphericity quantified by at least one of (i) a mean roundness not less than 0.710 as measured by Roundness Correlation Image Analysis, and (ii) a concavity less than 20% wherein concavity is the percent of alumina particles based on a sample of at least 100 particles, which have a concave outer peripheral portion that extends along a distance not less that 10% of d50 bij TEM inspection, the concave outer peripheral portion having a negative radius of curvature as viewed from an interior of the particle. Also claimed is a method for forming said ceramic particulare material comprising a hot isostatic pressing of loose powder in order to effect phase transformation of the loose powder.
