    Abstract: A catalyst used in polymerizing ethylene and/or propylene is prepared by mixing an alkaline earth metal hydride with an oxide or salt of an oxyacid of a Group VIa metal, supported on a difficultly reducible metal oxide. Specified hydrides are Mg(AlH4)2, Ca(AlH4)2 and Ba(AlH4)2 and these may contain lithium bromide which is formed during the preparation of the hydrides. Other features of the Specification are as described in the parent Specification.ALSO:Ethylene, propylene or mixtures thereof are polymerized with a catalyst prepared by mixing an alkaline earth metal aluminium hydride with an oxide or salt of an oxyacid of a Group VIa metal, supported on a difficulty reducible metal oxide. Specified hydrides are Mg(AlH4)2, Ca(AlH4)2 and Ba(AlH4)2 and these may contain lithium bromide which is formed during the preparation of the hydrides. The examples describe the removal of catalyst from the product using methanol and water, and the fractionation of the polymers with xylene.
