Abstract: A catalyst used in polymerizing ethylene and/or propylene is prepared by mixing an alkaline earth metal hydride with an oxide or salt of an oxyacid of a Group VIa metal, supported on a difficultly reducible metal oxide. Specified hydrides are Mg(AlH4)2, Ca(AlH4)2 and Ba(AlH4)2 and these may contain lithium bromide which is formed during the preparation of the hydrides. Other features of the Specification are as described in the parent Specification.ALSO:Ethylene, propylene or mixtures thereof are polymerized with a catalyst prepared by mixing an alkaline earth metal aluminium hydride with an oxide or salt of an oxyacid of a Group VIa metal, supported on a difficulty reducible metal oxide. Specified hydrides are Mg(AlH4)2, Ca(AlH4)2 and Ba(AlH4)2 and these may contain lithium bromide which is formed during the preparation of the hydrides. The examples describe the removal of catalyst from the product using methanol and water, and the fractionation of the polymers with xylene. Abstract: Catalysts for the polymerization of normally gaseous n-alkenes comprise an alkali metal hydride or a non-radioactive alkaline earth metal hydride together with an oxide or a salt of an oxyacid of a Group 5A metal. The 5A metal compounds disclosed are vanadium, niobium and tantalum pentoxides and cobalt, chromium, magnesium, calcium, zinc, copper and nickel salts of vanadic, niobic and tantalic acids. The details are otherwise as described in Specification 748,583 (see also Group IV (a)).ALSO:Normally gaseous n-alkenes are polymerized with an alkali metal hydride or a non-radioactive alkaline earth metal hydride together with an oxide or a salt of an oxy acid of a Group 5A metal. Alkenes specified are ethylene, propylene and 1-butene, and hydrogen, methane, ethane, propane and butane may also be present. Copolymerizable monomers which may be included are iso-butylene, t-butylethylene, tetrafluoroethylene, styrene and butadiene. Group 5A metal compounds described are vanadium, niobium and tantalum pentoxides and cobalt, chromium, magnesium, calcium, zinc, copper and nickel salts of vanadic, niobic and tantalic acids. The process is otherwise as described in Specification 748,583.
