Abstract: A gasoline composition contains an additive comprising a solution of boric acid in a solvent mixture comprising an alcohol and an oil-soluble polyoxyalkylene. The alcohol may be methyl-, ethyl-, isopropyl-, butyl-, or an amyl alcohol. The polyoxyalkylene compound has an S.S.U. viscosity at 100 DEG F. of from 200 to 1000, and has the general formula R-O-[(CHR1)n-O]y-R11 where R and R11 are hydrogen, or alkyl or acyl groups having 4 to 20 carbon atoms, R1 is hydrogen or an alkyl group having 1 to 5 carbon atoms, n is 1 to 4, and y is at least 5. The solvent mixture may contain from 20 to 80 per cent by volume of the alcohol. The gasoline may contain from 20 to 80 per cent by volume of the alcohol, the gasoline may contain from 0.1 to 5 per cent by volume of the additive and the concentration of boric acid in the gasoline may be from 0.001 to 0.05 per cent by weight. In an example the alcohol is methanol and the polyoxyalkylene compound is a monobutyl poly - 1,2 - oxypropylene glycol having a viscosity of 285 S.S.U. at 100 DEG F.; the composition also contains tetraethyl lead.
