Abstract: A thin extruded metallized elastomeric plastic sheetstock prepared with the island coating system forming a discontinuous metal layer on one of a first surface and a second surface of said sheetstock, whereby said sheetstock can be flexed without causing crinkles or other distortions in the flexed material while retaining the aesthetic properties of the said metal layer.

Abstract: Un proceso para fabricar un substrato metalizado usando un método de revestimiento en forma de islas, incluye depositar una capa de revestimiento que contiene un formador de película no volátil endurecible por radiacion. La parte revestida se metaliza entonces a vacío para formar las islas metálicas de la presente invencion. A continuacion se deposita una capa de revestimiento superior dieléctricos protector resinoso claro que contiene un formador de película no-volátil endurecible por radiacion para cubrir completamente la capa de islas metálicas, manteniendo al mismo tiempo las propiedades estéticas del sistema de revestimiento en forma de islas de metalizacion a un costo reducido y con variabilidad mínima entre partes.

Abstract: A process for manufacturing a metallized part using the island coating method, including spray depositing a primer layer, basecoat layer, or combined primer/basecoat layer. Each layer contains an increased amount of film forming polymer by using liquid CO₂ as a supplemental carrier along with a reduced amount of organic solvent carrier thereby reducing waste disposal costs and environmental concerns. Further, this modified island coating system can be used to deposit layers of 1.5 to 2.0 mils thick and maintain the aesthetic properties of the metallizing island coating system at a reduced cost and with minimal variability among parts.

Abstract: A process for manufacturing a metallized substrate using the island coating method, includes depositing a coating layer containing a radiation curable nonvolatile film former. The coated part is then vacuum metallized to form the metal islands of the present invention. A layer of clear resinous protective dielectric topcoat containing a radiation curable non-volatile film former is then deposited to completely cover the layer of metal islands while maintaining the aesthetic properties of the metallizing island coating system at a reduced cost and with minimal variability among parts.
