Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the method for the pretreatment suitable for the forming the ceramic heat insulating coating on a superalloy member. SOLUTION: The method for the pretreatment comprises first degreasing the surface of a superalloy member containing Al in an amount sufficient to form alumina by oxidation and elements such as Y, Hf, Ce and La in a total content of 0.1-0.9 wt.%, which have been added to improve the structure of the superalloy, by heating, removing the formed oxide film on the surface by abrading using a wet grit blast, removing the abrasive by ultrasonic cleaning in a aqueous solution containing a wetting agent, further, after successively rinsing the surface in pure water containing the wetting agent, in pure water and in a water-soluble organic solvent, drying with air and finally heating the superalloy member in an atmosphere, which is inert to the superalloy and alumina and has a dew point of -30--50 deg.F (-34--46 deg.C), to form an alumina film having a thickness of about 0.5-1.5 μm.

Abstract: A method of preparing a superalloy component to receive a ceramic thermal barrier coating without an intermediate bond coat is disclosed. The superalloy substrate is degreased, abrasively cleaned, ultrasonically cleaned, washed in an aqueous bath containing a wetting agent, rinsed at least once, and then heat treated in an atmosphere that is non-reactive with the substrate and alumina at a temperature and time sufficient to form a surface alumina layer which is predominantly alumina.
