Abstract:
A membrane of an ionic pendant-containing, water-insoluble copolymeric poly(amino acid) composed of a first moiety derived from a first amino acid which gives a water-soluble poly(amino acid) with ionic groups of carboxyl and/or amino groups as the pendants to the molecule, e g., glutamic acid, aspartic acid, lysine and ornithine, and a second moiety derived from a second amino acid which gives a water-insoluble poly (amino acid) e.g. leucine, alanine and methionine, in a specified molar proportion serves as a functional element of an electronic device such as a non-linear resistor capable of working in an aqueous medium and exhibiting a non-linear voltage-current relationship or a phenomenon of hysteresis in the voltage/current scanning.
Abstract:
A process for an efficient preparation of a mesophase pitch is disclosed. The process is suitable for the production of high performance carbon fibers, from a coal tar or a petroleum residual oil. More particularly, the present invention relates to a process for the preparation of a homogeneous mesophase pitch which comprises a continuous thermal treatment of a heavy oil or a pitch which does not contain quinoline insoluble fractions, in the presence or absence of an aromatic oil, subsequent distillation of the thermally treated product, recovery of a pitch with extremely low quinoline insoluble contents, hydrogenation of the pitch by continuous thermal treatment in the presence of a hydrogen-donating solvent, distillation and recovery of a hydrogenated pitch, and thermal treatment of the hydrogenated pitch. The mesophase pitch prepared by the process of the present invention is suitable for the production of high performance carbon fibers.
Abstract:
An automobile includes a steering angle detector means (62), a television camera (2) that takes pictures of lanes ahead of the car, and a computer (5) for processing the images taken by the television camera. A reference line is obtained by processing the image of lane markers taken by the television camera. A cubic is approximated from the reference line, and a reference steering angle is determined by the coefficients of the cubic. The reference steering angle is compared with the steering angle detected by the steering angle detector means in order to check for the deviation of the automobile from the lane.
Abstract:
A fluorinated saturated hydrocarbon which is an acyclic or cyclic fluorinated saturated hydrocarbon characterized by comprising less than 95 mol% of a trihydrofluorinated saturated hydrocarbon represented by the following formula (I)
Rf 1 -R 1 -Rf 2 (I)
(wherein R 1 represents a carbon chain in which CHF and CH 2 are bound, Rf 1 and Rf 2 each represents a perfluoroalkyl group, a fluorine atom or a hydrogen atom, at least one thereof is a perfluoroalkyl group, and further Rf 1 and Rf 2 may be bound to each other to form a ring by a perfluoroalkylene chain) and the balance of a tetrahydrofluorinated saturated hydrocarbon having the same carbon number and the same carbon structure as the trihydrofluorinated saturated hydrocarbon, as represented by the following formula (II)
Rf 1 -R 2 -Rf 2 (II)
(wherein R 2 represents a carbon chain in which CH 2 and CH 3 are bound, and Rf 1 and Rf 2 are as defined above) is provided as a fluorinated saturated hydrocarbon containing, in a high proportion, trihydrofluorocarbon which is excellent especially in the chemical stability and high in the safety for living bodies among hydrofluorocarbons (HFC) known to have zero ozone depletion potential and to have a small global warming potential.
Abstract:
Heavy oil or crude oil spills in sea water are recovered without polluting environment. A natural rubber latex and a coagulant are scattered around lumps of oil spills to coagulate the latex with the coagulant, so that a membrane of the latex is formed around the oil lumps.
Abstract:
A coating composition which is excellent in water resistance, weatherability and durability and can maintain its appearance for a prolonged period of time can be provided. A coating composition comprising a coating component and a photocatalyst containing calcium phosphate and titanium oxide is disclosed. As the photocatalyst, use is made of titanium oxide particles partially covered thereon with calcium phosphate, or porous body coated thereon with a film of titanium oxide, the film of titanium oxide being further covered partially thereon with calcium phosphate. The crystal form of titanium oxide is preferably anatase. The organic coating includes vinyl-type synthetic resin emulsions, and the inorganic coating is e.g. a solution containing a metal alkoxide for forming a film by a sol-gel method.
