    Abstract: The invention describes a fail safe voltage responsive circuit for producing an output level indicative of the relationship between two voltage levels. The voltage responsive circuit includes a fail-safe comparison circuit which assumes alternative modes in response to an alternating signal introduced into the comparison circuit when the voltage levels are within a predetermined range, one relative to the other. When the voltage levels are outside the range or if a component fails, the comparison circuit ceases to alternate between modes. The voltage responsive circuit is used in a preferred application involving a fail-safe combustion control system wherein one voltage level is used to supply bias current to a photoconductive cell, the cell sensing the presence or absence of flame.

    Abstract: A condition responsive system comprises a condition sensor for producing a fluctuating output signal having a predetermined frequency component in response to sensing of the condition to be detected, an output device arranged to assume a first state indicative of the presence of the condition being sensed when the sensor senses the condition and produces the fluctuating output signal and a second state indicative of the absence of the condition when the sensor does not produce the fluctuating output signal, and means responsive to the fluctuating output signal and connected in circuit between the sensor and the output device including an inductor for blocking signals of higher frequency than the frequency of the fluctuating output signal, a capacitor connected in series with the indicator for blocking signals of lower frequency than the frequency of the fluctuating output signal and a fail safe rectification circuit connected in circuit between the series combination of the capacitor and the inductor and the output device.

The period allowed for ignition is determined by the discharging of capacitor 62 which switches off transistor 72 to close valve 50 unless successful ignition holds the valve open by means of an ultra violet sensor 20 which switches on a transistor 36 through a transformer 26 when a flame is present, and thus keeps transistor 46 in its conducting state.
