A pressure-sensitive tape comprising a backing, a layer of corrosion-resistant filaments on one surface of the backing, and pressure-sensitive adhesive layer that coats the filaments and binds them to the backing. A method for constructing a member for undersea deployment is provided, which comprises providing at least one tubular member, winding a wire reinforcement about the tubular member(s); and winding a corrosion- resistant filament-reinforced material over the wire reinforcement; and coating the filament reinforced member(s) with a layer of extruded polymer.

Water activated tapes, in particular film laminated, water activated paper tapes and methods of making the same are disclosed. The film laminated, water activated paper tapes include a paper backing having a top surface and a bottom surface, a water activated adhesive applied to the bottom surface of the paper backing, and a film reinforcement structure applied to the top surface of the paper backing The film reinforcement structure includes an outermost oriented film, and a lamination layer. The lamination layer may include one or more of an enhanced polyethylene resin, a polyolefin plastomer, a very low density polyethylene, a nylon, a polyester, and a co-polyester laminating the outermost polyolefin film to the paper backing The laminating of the film reinforcement structure to the paper backing is an extrusion lamination process that includes coextruding the outermost polyolefin film and the lamination layer onto the paper backing

A process for continuous bulk polymerization is disclosed that includes providing a plug flow reactor comprising a primary loop reactor including a loop for recirculating a portion of a polymer-in-progress at a polymer flow rate back to a reactor in the primary loop reactor, introducing at least one monomer into the primary recirculation loop reactor at a monomer flow rate, polymerizing the monomer in the primary recirculation loop reactor in the presence of an initiator by way of a free-radical polymerization to form a polymer-in-progress, and recirculating a first portion of the polymer-in-progress through the loop into a reactor in the primary loop reactor to combine with the monomer at a ratio of polymer flow rate to monomer flow rate that is greater than 5.

A process for preparing a pressure sensitive adhesive using a modified planetary roller extruder (10) is described. The process in accordance with one aspect of the invention includes introducing primary raw materials including a non-thermoplastic elastomer into a feeding section (12) of the modified planetary roller extruder (10), conveying the raw materials from the feeding section (12) to a compounding section (14) of the modified planetary roller extruder (10), continuously mixing the primary raw materials in the compounding section (14) to produce a homogeneous adhesive composition. The adhesive composition may be applied to a web-form material. The compounding section (14) of the modified planetary roller extruder (10) includes a main spindle (26) surrounded by and intermeshed with a plurality of planetary spindles (28, 30) at least one of which is a double transversal mixing spindle having a plurality of back-cut helical flights.

A layered flame retardant system and method is disclosed comprising a first flame retardant stable layer (20) for covering a solid combustible material (10) and a second moisture protecting polyolefin stretch film layer (30). The polyolefin stretch film layer further compactly affixes the first flame retardant stable layer to the solid combustible material. Some embodiments incorporate a five layer flame retardant polyolefin stretch film with flame retardant additives primarily in the inner layers. Another embodiments incorporate thermal insulating material.

A device for testing adhesive tape including a sample holder located in a first plane and a movable platen having a major surface located in a plane perpendicular to the plane in which the sample holder is located. The platen and the sample holder each have an edge adjacent to the edge of the other, where the platen and the sample holder are moveable with respect to each other such that the movement of the platen with respect to the sample holder separates the adjacent edges and thereby applies a load to a length of tape that is secured to the surface of a sample in the holder and secured to the surface of the platen during testing.
