Abstract:
A tiered communications architecture for managing network traffic in a distributed system. Communication between client or control computers and a plurality of hardware devices is administered by agent and monitor devices whose activities are coordinated to reduce the number of open channels or sockets. The communications architecture also improves the transparency and scalability of the distributed system by reducing network mapping dependence. The architecture is desirably implemented in a proton beam therapy system to provide flexible security policies which improve patent safety and facilitate system maintenance and development.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to an apparatus for subcutaneously delivering a material; the apparatus comprises an elongate delivery tube (490) with first and second elongate tube members (492, 494), the tube members (492, 494) forming the delivery tube (490) when in the engaged closed position, the delivery tube (490) having a chamber (520) configured to accommodate a material (270) there within; an elongate pusher member (500) having a distal portion (528) configured to slidably extend through at least a portion of the delivery tube (490) so as to push at least a portion of the material (270) out of the delivery tube (490); the apparatus further comprises a flexible collar (560) which is disposed about the tube members (492, 494).

Abstract:
A method of treating or inhibiting progress of dementia and/or macular degeneration in a mammal involves administering compositions containing siRNA to heme oxygenase- 1 (HO-I) or heme oxygenase-2 (HO-2), a matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) inhibitor, a caspase inhibitor, or a metalloporphyrin in a manner that permits access to brain sites and/or the macula of the patient.
Abstract:
The present invention provides a wound approximation device for safely applying cyanoacrylate or other adhesives to skin lacerations. The wound approximation device comprises a resilient sheet and an opening, wherein the opening is of a sufficient size such that it surrounds a skin wound and exposes a margin of skin surrounding the wound when the resilient sheet in a stretched form is placed against the skin, and wherein a portion of the resilient sheet adjacent to the opening and opposite to a side of the resilient sheet to be placed against the skin comprises a substance with does not form a strong bond with a wound-sealing adhesive.
Abstract:
A substance is disclosed for preventing, delaying the onset of or treating one or more than one autoimmune disease, the substance comprising a combination of a polynucleotide construct comprising a polynucleotide sequence encoding ”BCL-2 and encoding one or more than one autoantigen for the autoimmune disease. A use is also disclosed of a polynucleotide construct comprising a combination of a polynucleotide construct comprising a polynucleotide sequence encoding ”BCL-2 and encoding one or more than one autoantigen for the autoimmune disease, for the manufacture of a medicament for preventing, delaying the onset of or treating one or more than one autoimmune disease.
Abstract:
An apparatus (50) processes a surface of an inhabitable structure. The apparatus includes a laser base unit (300) which irradiates an interaction region with laser light, the laser light removing material from the structure. The laser base unit includes a laser generator (310) and a laser head (200, 1200) coupled to the laser generator (310). The laser head (200, 1200) includes a containment plenum (240) which confines and removes material from the interaction region. The containment plenum (240) includes a rubber seal (246) which contacts the structure and which substantially surrounds the interaction region, thereby facilitating confinement and removal of material from the interaction region, and providing reduced disruption to activities within the structure. The apparatus further includes an anchoring mechanism (110, 1110) releasably coupled to the structure and releasably coupled to the laser head (200, 1200). The apparatus further includes a controller (500) electrically coupled to the laser base unit. The controller transmits control signals to the laser base unit (300) in response to user input.
Abstract:
A method of seismic retrofitting a concrete structure includes removing material from a portion of the concrete structure by irradiating the portion with a laser beam having a laser energy density. The method further includes positioning a stabilization structure in proximity to the portion of the concrete structure. The method further includes attaching the stabilization structure to the portion of the concrete structure, whereby the stabilization structure provides structural support to the concrete structure.
