Abstract:
Articles of ferrous metal protectively coated with a layer of a metal more noble than the ferrous metal and with an electricallyconductive overlayer formed by drying and heat curing to water insolubility a composition comprising aluminum powder in an aqueous solution of a combination of phosphoric acid, chromic acid, or molybdic acid, or metal salts of said acids.
Abstract:
A self-retained panel fastener assembly comprising a sleeve bolt carried by one workpiece and a barrel nut assembly carried by another workpiece. The sleeve bolt includes a shank having first and second portions interconnected by a groove and which carries a compressible retaining ring slidable along the groove and second shank portion. One end of the retaining ring includes means for aligning the workpieces during assembly of the sleeve bolt to the barrel nut assembly when assembling the joint.
Abstract:
A breakable collar for use with a rivet and an associated metal collar comprises an annular body portion having a recess in one end face. The metal collar is carried in the recess and the resultant assembly is frictionally retained on the tail of the rivet with the metal collar bearing against the outer surface of an adjacent panel in which the rivet is seated. When an axial force is applied to the rivet, the breakable collar splits or collapses so as not to interfere with the formation of the upset tail.

Abstract:
A finely powdered thermoplastic material is placed in a fluidizing chamber and is dispensed on a preheated threaded fastener element in controlled amounts by controlled air pulsations which pass through a venturi tube arrangement. The powdered material is deposited on the threaded surface in a predetermined amount and is fused thereto to provide a locking patch of solidified thermoplastic material.
Abstract:
A locknut having a polygonal body portion with a frustoconical crown extension at one end. A plurality of indentations are provided in selected flat surfaces of the body portion to form a corresponding number of locking regions in the bore of the nut. Each indentation is curved so that the ends of the indentation are deeper than the crest. As a result, the locking regions also are curved but flatter than the initial curvature of the bore, whereby added contact is provided between the locking regions and a mating male member.
Abstract:
Equipment for setting fasteners in a tape or strip of flexible and resilient material from which the fasteners may be automatically inserted into workpieces. The fasteners are carried in holes in the tape which are formed to accommodate different types or size fasteners. In addition, these holes may be barrelled to enhance the alignment of the fasteners for their insertion into the workpieces.
Abstract:
A prevailing torque fastener including a threaded section having a plurality of thread convolutions and a leading end that makes initial engagement with a mating thread when the fastener is tightened on a mating member. Some of the thread convolutions have a projection formed thereon extending axially of the fastener toward the leading end of the threaded section. The projections progressively increase in size from the leading end of the fastener so that the projections nearer the leading end are smaller than the adjacent projections nearer the other end of the fastener.
