Abstract: 18,834. Paget, S. C. Aug. 19. [Cognate Application, 25,958/13.] Chair keys and wedges.-Keys contain in one or more cavities 3 a liquid or semi-liquid to prevent shrinking. Each cavity is bounded by longitudinally - grained walls, the end walls being formed by plugs 4 driven in holes 2, and a closing-member 5 being provided. The surfaces of the cavity 2 may be treated with red lead or pitch, and of holes 2 and plugs 4 with red lead. In a modification, two holes are drilled in each key, lined with pitch and grease, and closed by a taper bung or plug of wood, or by corks or screwed stoppers, and each hole may have a bottom core of willow. The outer surfaces of the key and plugs may be blackleaded or coated with pitch, the lining being omitted in the latter case. Oil, water, grease, &c. are used as filling-materials. The earlier Provisional Specification describes also the use of wax or other suitable solids as filling- material, and the later Provisional Specification mentions vaseline.

Carpets; rugs.-In weaving pile carpets and rugs, soft cushioning-warps 4 of spun yarn are woven in between the backing or stufferwarps 1 and the upper wefts 2 and pile warps 5, which may be looped or cut. In carpets such as Brussels and Wiltons, the cushioning-warps are arranged between the stuffer warps and the lower wefts 2 , and they may be straight or formed with loops which may be cut, so that they resemble the surface pile of a carpet. Some of the wefts 2 may pass above the cushioning-warps and some below them. The cushioning-warps may be woven in both above and below the stuffer warps, if desired. The cushioning-warps form a bed for the pile, and linings for the carpets and rugs may be dispensed with.
