Abstract: 18,834. Paget, S. C. Aug. 19. [Cognate Application, 25,958/13.] Chair keys and wedges.-Keys contain in one or more cavities 3 a liquid or semi-liquid to prevent shrinking. Each cavity is bounded by longitudinally - grained walls, the end walls being formed by plugs 4 driven in holes 2, and a closing-member 5 being provided. The surfaces of the cavity 2 may be treated with red lead or pitch, and of holes 2 and plugs 4 with red lead. In a modification, two holes are drilled in each key, lined with pitch and grease, and closed by a taper bung or plug of wood, or by corks or screwed stoppers, and each hole may have a bottom core of willow. The outer surfaces of the key and plugs may be blackleaded or coated with pitch, the lining being omitted in the latter case. Oil, water, grease, &c. are used as filling-materials. The earlier Provisional Specification describes also the use of wax or other suitable solids as filling- material, and the later Provisional Specification mentions vaseline.

Cycles and systems of working; cylinders, combustion chambers for.-In an engine in which the piston receives one or more impulses during each working stroke, the combustion chamber, which is separated from the cylinder by a valve, contains a displacer E' which, together with the piston of a pump G' for charging the combustion chamber E and the valves F, I, is actuated by a shaft L driven from an electric or other independent motor. After each impulse, the valve F is closed and the pump charges the combustion chamber through the valve I after the closing of which the charge is ignited and transferred to the working cylinder. The combustion chamber is scavenged by the downward movement of the displacer E which is actuated by a cam K. The valves F, I are reciprocated by eccentrics on a side shaft M which is geared to the overhead shaft L. Each cylinder may have one or more combustion chambers.

Direct air-pressure apparatus, non automatic.-In a spraying-machine of the kind c mprising a reservoir having an air space, an air-pump provided with a non-return valve, and an outlet tube extending to the bottom of the reservoir through which the liquid is ejected, the valves or other perishable parts are protected from the liquid by means of a baffle-gauge or a cock. In the form shown in Fig. 2, the air valve is formed of a perforated tube 9 surrounded by a rubber tube 12, and is protected from the action of the liquid by means of a cock 6. Air is supplied from the pump 14, Fig. 1, mounted on the side of the container, through the tube 10 to the fitting 11 containing the valve, and liquid is led away through the tube 18 past the cock 19 The container is provided with a handle 21 and filling- plug 20.
